Title: Gold is volatile, yet positively biased after CME announcement
Gold advanced today, recovering some of the losses incurred during the week, where the metal benefited from the announcement of the CME Group of raising margins, the thing that made the metal more attractive for investors as they have to put less to hold the safe haven gold. Commodity Trade Exchange Group (CME) announced yesterday after the regular session closing that it has slashed the margin requirements for gold contracts by 10%, where the initial margin for the 100-ounce of gold contracts from one to four months will slump to $9,113 from $10,125. The second reduction this year comes as a part of the normal view of the Group which takes into consideration the latest trading conditions, following the several increases when the metal reached the peak above the $1900.00 levels. ...

Title: German Data Leads to Additional Euro Losses
Disappointing German data sent the euro to fresh lows against the USD during European trading yesterday. In a sign that even the euro-zone's biggest economy was not immune from the region's debt crisis, the German Flash Manufacturing PMI and Ifo Business Climate both came in significantly below expectations. As a result, the EUR/USD dropped as low as 1.2515, close to a two-year low. As we close out the week, traders will want to continue monitoring any developments out of the euro-zone. Any new negative developments could send the common currency below $1.2500 before markets close for the week. Economic News USD - Safe-Haven USD Sees Additional Gains The US dollar was able to extend its gains against the euro yesterday, following the release of several disappointing economic indicators ...

Title: Germany May Have No Choice But To Play Ball
Investors in Asia were not as confident as those in the US and Europe, with most equity markets in Asia trading in negative territory or flat. A lot of investors are likely choosing to stay on the sidelines with so much of their focus on the uncertainty in Europe. Overnight, Italy’s Monti attempted to reassure the market by stating Eurobonds gained a lot of support at Wednesday’s EU summit, with the obvious exception of Germany. Monti appears to be suggesting Germany will give in to other EU leaders. Looking at Germany’s alternatives we are inclined to agree with this assumption. The balance of power may be shifting, and Germany may have no other option than to bow to pressure from its fellow EU nations, especially when faced with the prospect of Greece leaving the Eurozone which puts ...

Title: Gold prices rise 1 percent as dollar retreats
(Reuters) - Gold rose 1 percent on Thursday, snapping three days of losses to climb towards $1,580 an ounce, as the dollar swung back into negative territory versus the euro after a softer-than-expected U.S. manufacturing report. Confidence in the single currency remains fragile after it earlier hit a near two-year low against the dollar. Dire German manufacturing and business climate data spooked investors already weighing up the risk of Greece leaving the euro zone. But gold got a lift from International Monetary Fund data showing another rise in central bank gold holdings in April, after the largest purchase in over four years by the Philippines. Spot gold rose as high as $1,577.50 an ounce and was up 0.8 percent to $1,573.11 an ounce by 9:50 a.m. EDT (1350 GMT), while U.S. gold ...

Title: Gold edges up as euro cuts losses
(Reuters) - Gold rose on Thursday, after three days of losses, although the drag of the euro near two-year lows tempered the bullion price and eclipsed data that showed another rise in central bank purchases of the metal last month. The euro edged higher, having hit a near two-year low against the dollar earlier on Thursday after dire German economic data suggested no country in the region was immune from crisis, spooking investors already weighing the risk of Greece leaving the euro zone. This offset a potentially bullish lift from International Monetary Fund data that showed another rise in central bank holdings in April, after the largest purchase in over four years by the Philippines and further additions by the likes of Mexico, Ukraine and Russia to their reserves. Spot gold rose 0. ...

Title: Market Drivers - Currencies : 24/05/2012
Today's Comment Yesterday we stated that a Chinese PMI figure below 49 would have a negative effect on the financial market. The Chinese PMI came out at 48.7, i.e. a fall from 49.3 last month … the effects of the fall is very evident in the FX market, particularly in respect of commodity-related currencies. This supports our scenario that the economy (global) is lagging a bit behind here in the second quarter, which can particularly be attributed to the renewed outbreak of the European debt crisis. The PMI index has now been below 50 for seven months on end. This is very concerning, particularly because many investors maintain their positive investments as they expect that China will be in for a soft landing. If the landing is to be soft, the Chinese PMI figures will have to increase ...

Title: UK shares edge up cautiously from lows
(Reuters) - Britain's top shares rose on Thursday, clawing back some of the previous session's steep losses, though trade remained cautious after a European summit failed to produce concrete proposals for tackling the region's debt crisis. Markets rallied earlier in the week on hopes that new proposals would be made at the informal summit, including ways of sparking economic growth and boosting investor confidence. Thursday's economic data made for grim reading, with Britain falling deeper into recession than first thought in the first quarter after a sharp drop in construction output. In Germany, the manufacturing sector shrank and business sentiment plummeted in May, heightening concerns about the ability of Europe's largest economy to weather the region's crisis. Market moves have ...
