Title: Gold down almost 1.5 percent as selling snowballs
(Reuters) - Gold traded near intraday lows on Tuesday afternoon with selling accelerating on low volumes as the euro lost further ground ahead of a much-anticipated European summit. The pressure started on Monday after bullion failed to break through key resistance at $1,600 per ounce, sending prices below near-term technical support levels. That selling snowballed on Tuesday afternoon in New York, sending prices below $1,570 an ounce as the euro weakened with investors betting Wednesday's meeting of European leaders would do little to tackle the region's debt crisis. "The euro continued to sag. It's not going to make a decisive move until the EU summit," said James Steel, chief commodity analyst at HSBC. Weaker oil prices on news of a potential deal between Iran and the U.N. nuclear ...

Title: Gold still down, weaker euro blamed
(Reuters) - Gold remained under pressure trading below a near-term technical support level on Tuesday due to a weaker euro, with investors betting against a meeting of European leaders this week doing much to tackle the region's debt crisis. Platinum tracked gold lower, shrugging off news of a fresh production outage in South Africa. The euro remained clear of last week's four-month lows but was stuck in negative territory against the dollar as worries about Greek politics and Spanish banking problems kept the currency under pressure. Spot gold was down 0.63 percent at $1,576.21 an ounce at 13:45 p.m. (1745 GMT). U.S. gold futures for June delivery were down $6.1 or 0.38 percent at $1,582.6 but off an intraday low of $1,572 hit earlier. While prices are up from the December ...

Title: Global shares gain on Europe optimism; euro dips
(Reuters) - World equity markets rose for a second consecutive day on Tuesday on hopes European leaders will tackle the region's debt crisis, but the euro fell on doubts that much would come of a meeting just a day away. European shares gained almost 2 percent on optimism European leaders may devise new measures to foster growth in the euro zone and restore a doubtful market's confidence. An informal summit of European Union leaders late on Wednesday is expected to discuss the idea of regional bonds jointly underwritten by all euro zone member states. However, Germany's long-standing opposition is unlikely to change; the country has dismissed the French-led call for the euro zone to issue common bonds. "The string of summit meetings that have been called to address the euro crisis thus ...

Title: Waiting for the EU Summit
Trading in the London Session was choppy with the market unwilling to take any clear direction as we lead up to tomorrow's informal EU summit. The market toyed with the idea of Eurobonds (they like that idea and risk assets may rally tomorrow on any signs they are on the horizon.) Then they focused on the prospect of a showdown between Germany and France, Europe's de facto leaders, which caused a mild sell off. Right now the chances of the latter happening are more likely especially since Merkel is unlikely to be re-elected next year if she agrees to Eurobonds (read Germany guaranteeing the bulk of Europe's debt), which would never fly with German voters. Although the EU President said that everything is on the table for discussion tomorrow, he also said that no concrete measures will be ...

Title: Shares up on Europe summit hopes, euro dips
(Reuters) - World shares gained for a second day on Tuesday amid speculation of fresh action by European leaders to tackle the region's debt crisis, even as the euro fell on doubts that much would come of this week's meeting. A rise in existing home sales to their highest annual rate in nearly two years in April and a decline in foreclosures added to the positive tone in equity markets. The National Association of Realtors said existing home sales increased 3.4 percent to an annual rate of 4.62 million units, the highest since May 2010. Across the U.S., the median price for a home resale jumped to $177,400 in April, up 10.1 percent from a year earlier. "The housing market is showing some signs of life and the April number suggests that sales of single-family homes are rising again," ...

Title: Shares gain on hopes of Europe action, euro falls
(Reuters) - World shares gained for a second day on Tuesday on increasing speculation of fresh action to tackle Europe's debt crisis at an informal talks later this week, even as the euro fell on skepticism much would come of the meeting. European shares gained more than 1 percent and Wall Street opened higher. Bond prices fell on both sides of the Atlantic on speculation European leaders may devise new measures to foster growth in the euro zone and restore market confidence. An informal supper summit of European Union leaders on Wednesday also is expected to discuss the idea of euro area bonds jointly underwritten by all euro zone member states. However, Germany's long-standing opposition is unlikely to change, particularly as Germany has dismissed the French-led call for the eurozone ...

Title: Euro falls as hopes dim of EU summit progress
(Reuters) - The euro fell on Tuesday as skepticism grew that an informal meeting of European leaders would yield much progress in tackling the debt crisis, with worries about Greek politics and Spanish banking problems expected to keep the currency weak. While there have been hopes in some quarters that measures to boost growth may be agreed at Wednesday's summit, investors were not confident of a breakthrough given apparent differences in opinion between Germany and France. French President Francois Hollande is expected to push for a joint euro zone bond, a measure backed by Italy, Spain and the European Commission. However Germany, Europe's largest economy and paymaster, has so far opposed the move and continues to champion austerity measures. A German official said on Tuesday euro ...

Title: The Endgame of the Greek Crisis
Forex News and Events: It has taken two-and-a-half years, and nearly USD 300bn of IMF/EU funds for markets to finally weigh in a more probable than not exit of the debt-laden country. Greece’s EMU exit is imminent for the second time in the last six months. Surprisingly though, the trigger for the recent gloomy expectations for Greece was not exclusively of an economic nature but also politics. During May 6 elections, the Greeks expressed their unwillingness to abide by the agreed-upon austerity measures. It wouldn’t have been a very dangerous position had Greece been solvent, but regardless of EU officials’ reassurance of continued help for Greece throughout the process, the country would run out of funds for the next installments due end of June and early July. In addition to markets ...

Title: U.K. inflation hits government`s upper limit for the first time since February 2010
Today`s U.K. data showed that CPI for the year ended April retreated again to 3.0%, below forecasts of 3.1%, from the prior reading of 3.5%, hitting the government`s upper limit for the first time since February 2010. The drop was triggered by the Easter holiday and prices changes in the transport, alcohol and clothing categories. Yet, on the monthly basis the reading showed a rise to 0.6% from 0.3%. Other inflation gages showed a drop also as retail price index slipped to 3.5% on the annual basis from 3.6% while surged to 0.7% from 0.4% on the month. Last week, the BoE said in the quarterly inflation report that inflation outlook remains uncertain, where the bank referred that "near-term outlook is judged to be somewhat higher than expected three months ago, with inflation now ...
