Title: The Weekly Bottom Line : 04/05/2012
The Weekly Bottom Line HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK United States - U.S. job creation may have weakened in the last few months, but the grounds for sustaining stronger employment growth are more fertile now than have been since the economic recovery began. Europe's labor market, by contrast, is likely to deteriorate further before it gets better. - Europe's (nonfinancial) corporate sector is highly leveraged. As balance sheet adjustments are made, Europe risks further decreases in investment, higher layoffs, and lower economic growth. These effects are compounded by deleveraging in the public sector. - U.S. corporations, by contrast, are more profitable and liquid than they have ever been. At some point some of these funds will be unleashed towards new investment, creating a positive ...

Title: Forex-Euro dips ahead of elections, U.S. jobs data
(Reuters) - The euro fell against the dollar on Friday after weak euro zone services data and before weekend elections in France and Greece, though falls were limited ahead of U.S. jobs data later in the day. Lower-than-forecast jobs creation in the United States could reignite talk of more Federal Reserve monetary easing, which would weigh on the dollar. Figures due at 8.30 a.m. EDT are expected to show 170,000 jobs were added in April. However, after weak private payrolls data earlier this week investors see a risk of a lower number. "A non-farm payrolls number between 50,000 and 150,000 would make the market speculate about further QE which could weigh marginally on the dollar," said Carl Hammer, chief currency strategist at SEB in Stockholm. But any gains for the euro were likely ...

Title: Euro falls for third day, pressured by Europe data
(Reuters) - The euro fell for a third straight session against the dollar on Wednesday after soft European data fueled fears about a deep and broader slowdown in the region ahead of key elections in France and Greece. The euro, however, briefly trimmed losses after a report showed the U.S. economy created fewer private-sector jobs than expected last month. It also came off its lows after speculation the European Central Bank could provide euro-zone banks with more liquidity in another long-term refinancing operation. Wednesday's weaker euro zone data, not just in indebted smaller regional economies but in core nations too, raised speculation over possible policy signals at Thursday's ECB monetary policy meeting. Italy's manufacturing sector shrank more than expected, with new orders ...

Title: Euro falls for 3rd day, hurt by Europe data
(Reuters) - The euro fell for a third straight session against the dollar on Wednesday after soft European data rekindled fears about a deep and broader slowdown in the region ahead of key elections in France and Greece. The euro, however, briefly trimmed losses after a report showed the U.S. economy created fewer private-sector jobs than expected last month. It also came off its lows after speculation the European Central Bank could infuse euro-zone banks with more liquidity in another long-term refinancing operation. Wednesday's weaker euro zone data, not just in indebted smaller regional economies but in core nations, too, raised speculation over possible policy signals at Thursday's ECB monetary policy meeting. Italy's manufacturing sector shrank far more than expected, with new ...

Title: Dollar bounces back on U.S. manufacturing surprise
(Reuters) - The dollar bounced back on Wednesday from 2-1/2-month lows against the Japanese yen after upbeat U.S. manufacturing data soothed fears the economy was slowing, though gains were minimal ahead of the next set of figures including payrolls. The Institute of Supply Management report showed the strongest rate of U.S. factory growth in 10 months, a surprise after a string of disappointing data and countering speculation the Federal Reserve will embark on a third round of bond buying to bolster the economy. "After the surprisingly strong ISM number, the next job data will be more important than usual. If it is strong, it could cement expectation of strong recovery at least in the United States," said Mitsuru Saito, chief economist at Tokai Tokyo Securities. The payroll data is due ...

Title: Dollar softer, but euro fails get a boost
(Reuters) - The dollar briefly fell to a two-month low against a basket of currencies on Monday, hurt by signs that the U.S. economic recovery was losing momentum, which keeps alive the chances of further monetary easing by the Federal Reserve. Despite the dollar's problems, the euro failed to gain much traction, with investors looking to sell at higher levels as harsh austerity measures take a toll on economic activity across the region. Spain slipped back into recession as gross domestic product shrank 0.3 percent in the January to March quarter, data showed on Monday. Traders were likely to be wary of the euro ahead of the second round of the French presidential vote as well as elections for a new Greek parliament next weekend. The dollar .DXY touched 78.638 against a basket of ...

Title: Dollar hits two-month low as U.S. economic momentum slows
(Reuters) - The dollar fell to a two-month low against a basket of currencies on Monday, weighed down after modest first quarter growth in the U.S. economy kept alive chances of further monetary easing by the Federal Reserve. The dollar is likely to come under more pressure if data, including U.S. jobs numbers, this week disappoints. U.S. growth cooled in the first quarter partly due to businesses cutting back on investments, reinforcing the central bank's contention that interest rates should be kept near zero through 2014. The slowdown fuelled speculation that the Fed may eventually launch another bond buying program, or a third round of quantitative easing. That would likely have a negative effect on the dollar while giving riskier assets like stocks, commodities and higher-yielding ...
