Title: Market Drivers - Currencies : 25/05/2012
Market Drivers - Currencies Today's Comment As there are no major items on today's agenda, the markedly weaker-than-expected PMI data from Europe and China (as well as lower-than-expected IFO figures from Germany) published yesterday will undoubtedly show repercussions in Friday's market. Ironically, the equity market and commodity market did not show any considerable negative reactions to the news yesterday. The reason for this is most likely a fairly simple one – the weak economic indicators will increase the likelihood of a central bank intervention – lower interest rates – more QE, fiscal stimuli from China, etc. – and that will be to the liking of risky assets as they have become almost dependent on such measures to maintain the current levels. The poor PMI data signal that the ...

Title: Analysis: China's new privatization plan faces push-back risk
(Reuters) - China's new push to open state controlled industries may look bold after a decade of stuttering privatization progress, but Beijing faces stiff resistance from vested interests in its effort to extend its World Trade Organisation dividend. Beijing's leaders, its top think-tanks, the World Bank and private sector economists all largely agree that for China to build on reform-fired growth after its first decade of WTO membership, state firms must be more competitive and capital better allocated. The question is whether publication this week of detailed plans to allow private investment in highways, health care and railways will really help dilute state involvement in a range of industries where top executives enjoy ministerial level status and firms get preferential access to ...

Title: What would Greek exit mean for the U.S. economy?
(Reuters) - Uncertainty over the fate of the euro currency is already dampening U.S. economic growth and any significant worsening of the crisis would deal a blow to a recovery that is gradually gathering steam. Economists estimate that volatile markets and business uncertainty over the fate of Greece and the policy course in Europe is already shaving anywhere from one tenth to one half a percentage point from U.S. 2012 gross domestic product growth. In a Reuters poll last week, U.S. GDP was forecast on average at 2.3 percent for 2012 and 2.4 percent for 2013. The direct hit to growth comes through trade. U.S. exports to the European Union account for 19 percent of total exports, and those to the euro zone represent 13 percent of the total. But when calculated in terms of GDP, the share ...

Title: Fed's Dudley eyes costs of more policy easing
(Reuters) - The Federal Reserve would not want to ease policy more - including another round of quantitative easing (QE) - if U.S. economic growth continues to eat into "slack" in the economy including unused labor, an influential Fed official said on Thursday. New York Fed President William Dudley, a permanent voter on the Fed's policy committee who is closely aligned with Chairman Ben Bernanke, did not tilt his hand on what, if any, steps he wants the central bank to take at its next policy-setting meeting in June. But he sketched out what could lead to more easing - and even tightening - of the Fed's ultra easy policy stance. "As long as the U.S. economy continues to grow sufficiently fast to cut into the nation's unused economic resources at a meaningful pace, I think the benefits ...

Title: Pound Drops After BoE Releases Minutes of Monetary Policy Meeting
The Great Britain pound dropped today, reaching the lowest level in a month against the US dollar and the lowest in two months versus the Japanese yen, after the minutes of the central bank’s monetary policy meeting were released. The minutes showed that the policy makers of the Bank of England were considering additional stimulus. They cited risks associated with the European crisis as threats to the economy. Additionally, uncertain prospects for economic growth were also considered a danger: Output remained significantly below its pre-crisis trend and persistently weak growth might impair the future supply capacity of the economy through hysteretic effects: that risk could be attenuated by a more aggressive loosening of policy in the near term. Most members of the Monetary Policy ...

Title: Asian stocks driven lower by downgrades in China, Japan ahead of EU summit
Ahead of a meeting of European leaders, the MSCI Asia Pacific Index dropped 1.5% at 12:31 in Tokyo after investors lost their appetite for risk after they were spooked by the mounting worries over Greece exiting the eurozone, while BoJ held its monetary policy unchanged although growth is slowing. Greece’s former Prime Minister Lucas Papademos said yesterday that while it is unlikely that the nation will leave the eurozone, the risks are still high. And if this would prove to be the case, other countries may follow, warned Jin Liqun, chairman of China Investment Corp. Meanwhile, one day after Fitch cut the Japan’s rating by one notch to A-plus from AA with negative outlook, citing “high and rising public debt” burden, Japan showed a slowdown in its exports during April, adding to ...

Title: World Bank: Asia must watch inflations closely
The World Bank noted that policy makers in Asia’s emerging economies should watch closely inflation rates and working hardly on keeping inflation in targets, adding that inflation is the main tool of controlling the nation’s growth where the bank sees the slower pace of Asia’s growth. Adding that, many of Asian policy makers whom have cut interest rates this year, are under pressure to support growth especially amid the current threats of Europe’s sovereign debt crisis.
