New home sales, prices rise in April
(Reuters) - New single-family home sales rose solidly in April and prices pushed higher, offering further evidence the housing market was turning the corner.
The Commerce Department said on Wednesday sales increased 3.3 percent to a seasonally adjusted 343,000-unit annual rate after a 332,000-unit pace in March.
The report, whose details were fairly bullish, came on the heels of news on Tuesday that home resales hit a two-year high in April and suggested the housing market recovery was gaining traction.
It also highlighted the economy's underlying strength, even though job growth has slowed in recent months. The weak housing market had been the Achilles heel of the economy's recovery from the 2007-09 recession.
"It's encouraging. These are signs that we might be forming a bottom in ...

Forex-Euro slides ahead of summit; yen tumbles
(Reuters) - The euro fell against the dollar for the first time in three days on Tuesday as investors doubted whether an informal meeting of European leaders this week would yield much progress in tackling the region's debt crisis.
The weakness in Europe's common currency suggested an uncertain outlook despite a fall in Spanish and Italian government bond yields, and some analysts said stretched positioning and oversold signals could lead to a short squeeze and a higher euro.
While there have been hopes that Wednesday's summit may lead to agreement on measures to boost euro zone growth, investors were not confident of a breakthrough given apparent differences in opinion between Germany and France.

Euro slides vs. dollar as EU summit hopes wane
(Reuters) - The euro fell against the dollar on Tuesday after two days of gains as investors pared back expectations that an informal meeting of European leaders this week would yield much progress in tackling the region's debt crisis.
However, given the market's stretched bearish positioning and oversold signals on the technical charts, the euro could see a short-term squeeze higher ahead of the European summit.
The yen, meanwhile, tumbled after Fitch downgraded Japan's ratings and although the currency posted the biggest loss versus the dollar, investors remained focused on the euro.

U.S. Review
To QE3 or Not To QE3: That is the Question
- Some market participants are beginning to speculate about another round of quantitative easing. Although recent growth indicators have not been particularly stellar, the economy is still growing. Moreover, core CPI inflation in the neighborhood of 2 percent means that the threshold for more QE is relatively high.
- Overall, indicators were positive during the week. Housing starts increased by 2.6 percent in April, the Empire Manufacturing index improved to 17.09 in May from a 6.56 print in April and retail sales printed a 0.1 percent increase in April, in line with expectations.

The Weekly Bottom Line : 19/05/2012
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
United States
- Global economic concerns ratcheted up this week. Widespread discussion of a Greek exit continued, Spanish banks faced rating downgrades and periphery sovereign debt yields moved higher.
- Financial markets have responded to these global worries with increased risk aversion. The S&P is poised to end the week 3% lower, and 10-year treasuries are yielding just 1.7%.
- U.S. economic data has proved somewhat more encouraging, but growth is still struggling to breakout beyond a moderate pace. This has kept the possibility of additional monetary stimulus alive even if the threshold remains quite high.
Canada
- Recent economic indicators are showing a resurgence of strength in the Canadian economy. Strong ...

Vale sees iron ore price rising in second half of 2012
Brazilian mining company Vale SA (VALE5.SA) remains confident the price of iron-ore, its main product, will rise in the second half of 2012, relieving environmental and economic pressures on the company which have hurt growth and delayed new projects.
Iron ore .IO62-CNI=SI fell to its lowest level in nearly six months on Friday, slipping 1.7 percent to $131.30 a metric ton (1.1023 tons). The medium- to long-term price, though, should be in the range of $120 to $180 a metric ton, Jose Carlos Martins, Vale's head of ferrous metals and strategy, said at a lunchtime gathering with reporters in Rio de Janeiro.
Demand for steel remains strong in China, thanks to housing, Vale Chief Financial Officer Tito Martins added. At the same time, declines in prices push higher-cost Chinese producers out ...

A mild relief on Merkel, upbeat U.S. data
After the deep selloff markets recover some of earlier losses triggered by fears of “Grexit”, after politicians failed to find a common ground and name a new coalition government. Meanwhile Angela Merkel in an interview with CNBC reiterated following many European politicians “I want Greece to stay in the Euro” giving markets a minor relief, and a reason to rebound in a normal pullback after being oversold.
The EUR/USD decently off lows, the pair has traded the lowest since January today at 1.2680, and currently trading around 1.2750. Meanwhile, U.S. housing sector continues to show recovery, as building permits fell to 715,000 last month, however March permits were revised upward to 769,000. Central Banks' to the Rescue?
Central Banks' to the Rescue?
The Bank of England stole the headlines this morning as it delivered its second Inflation Report of the year. Its message was fairly grim: the UK won't regain its 2007 level of output until 2018. The biggest threat to the UK economy right now according to the bank is the impasse in the Eurozone (something the BOE can't control).
The BOE: "blame the Royal Family and the Eurozone"
However, the one thing it can control is QE and interest rates, and it kept the door to more QE firmly open today. It noted that Q1 GDP figures could be revised higher, however a number of "one off" factors like the Queen's Jubilee bank holiday this year could knock 0.5% from GDP. This "holiday" could have a more damaging economic effect than the Royal Wedding, according to the Bank. ...
