USD Moves Up vs. JPY Following Japanese Credit Downgrade
The JPY took losses against the US dollar during European trading yesterday, following a downgrade of Japan's credit rating. The USD/JPY advanced close to 60 pips over the course of the day, eventually peaking at 79.93. Today, dollar traders will want to pay attention to US New Home Sales figure, set to be released at 14:00 GMT. Analysts are forecasting the figure to show improvements in the US real estate sector, which if true, could help the greenback extend yesterday's gains. In addition to the news out of the US, traders will want to pay attention to any announcements out of the euro-zone. An informal meeting of euro-zone leaders is set to conclude today. Any signs of a new strategy to combat the region's debt crisis could lead to market volatility.

Euro falls as hopes dim of EU summit progress
(Reuters) - The euro fell on Tuesday as skepticism grew that an informal meeting of European leaders would yield much progress in tackling the debt crisis, with worries about Greek politics and Spanish banking problems expected to keep the currency weak.
While there have been hopes in some quarters that measures to boost growth may be agreed at Wednesday's summit, investors were not confident of a breakthrough given apparent differences in opinion between Germany and France.
French President Francois Hollande is expected to push for a joint euro zone bond, a measure backed by Italy, Spain and the European Commission.
However Germany, Europe's largest economy and paymaster, has so far opposed the move and continues to champion austerity measures. A German official said on Tuesday euro ...

EUR/USD Rebound On Profit Taking
Sunrise Market Commentary
- Fixed Income: limited profit taking on core bond markets
- Global core bond markets fell prey to some profit taking in a thin, dull trading session. However, given the strength of equities, bond losses were very limited and occurred at the onset of trading. Today, the eco calendar remains thin and the profit taking might go some further in the run-up to tomorrow's informal EU Summit.
- Currencies EUR/USD rebound on profit taking
- The correction in EUR/USD was prolonged, but the euro gains were modest and mostly technical in nature. The UK inflation report is the eye-catcher of the day as it may influence sterling. However, overall trading might again be thin ahead of tomorrow's euro Summit.

Euro rallies from 4-month low versus dollar
The euro rallied from a four-month low against the dollar on Friday as investors pared bets against the single currency after a more than 3 percent drop this month, but concerns about Greece and Spain were likely to keep it under pressure.
Positioning ahead of the weekend meeting of the Group of 8 major industrialized nations and technical support also helped, traders said, as the euro approached its January low of $1.2623. Gains accelerated after a wave of stops were triggered in the euro's grind higher.
Despite Friday's rebound, investors preferred the relative safety of the U.S. dollar and the Japanese yen as worries about Europe persisted after Moody's cut the credit ratings of 16 Spanish banks late on Thursday.
Some traders said investors were wary of placing bets ahead of the ...

Euro comes off 4-month low but worries remain
The euro rose from a four-month low against the dollar on Friday as investors pared bets against the single currency after a 4 percent drop this month but concerns about Greece and Spain were likely to keep it under pressure.
Technical support also helped, traders said, as the euro approached its January low of $1.2623. A break beneath that would opened the door to a slide toward the 2010 lows around $1.1875.
Despite Friday's gains, investors preferred the relative safety of the U.S. dollar and the Japanese yen as worries about Europe persisted after Moody's cut the credit ratings of 16 Spanish banks on Thursday.
Some traders had earlier said the euro's recent decline could slow, given investors may be wary of holding positions over the weekend when leaders of the G8 major industrial ...

Euro zone market turmoil to last 12-24 months: German finance minister
German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Friday that market turmoil surrounding the euro zone crisis could last another 12 to 24 months and he urged Greeks to decide whether they wished to stay in the single currency.
"Regarding the crisis of confidence in the euro ... in 12 to 24 months we will see a calming of the financial markets," he told France's Europe 1 radio.
With Greece heading towards new elections in mid-June, the German minister said only the Greek people could decide whether the recession-struck country would stay in the euro.
"It's up to Greek politicians to explain the reality to their people and not make false promises," he said. "We want Greece to stay in the euro but meet its commitments and that's a decision that's up to the Greeks."

Euro knocked by Greece worries, more losses likely
The euro fell to a four-month low against the dollar on Wednesday and risked more losses on the prospect of prolonged political instability in Greece that could result in the country exiting the euro.
With Greece announcing fresh elections next month and investors concerned about the knock-on effects of a Greek euro exit for economies like Spain and Italy, investors fled the euro and sought the perceived safety of the dollar and the yen.
The dollar rose to its highest in four months against a basket of currencies, while the euro also hit a three-month low versus the yen.
The euro dropped to $1.2681 against the dollar on EBS trading platform, which left it on track to test the January low of $1.2624, below which would mark the euro's lowest level since August 2010.
However, it recovered ...
