Germany May Have No Choice But To Play Ball
Investors in Asia were not as confident as those in the US and Europe, with most equity markets in Asia trading in negative territory or flat. A lot of investors are likely choosing to stay on the sidelines with so much of their focus on the uncertainty in Europe.
Overnight, Italy’s Monti attempted to reassure the market by stating Eurobonds gained a lot of support at Wednesday’s EU summit, with the obvious exception of Germany.
Monti appears to be suggesting Germany will give in to other EU leaders. Looking at Germany’s alternatives we are inclined to agree with this assumption. The balance of power may be shifting, and Germany may have no other option than to bow to pressure from its fellow EU nations, especially when faced with the prospect of Greece leaving the Eurozone which puts ...

Euro Can’t Maintain Gains in Forex Trading
Earlier, the euro showed signs of fight as it headed higher against the US dollar. Now, though, the euro can’t maintain gains in Forex trading and is headed lower. Worries about the eurozone, and what’s next for the currency region, are causing doubt, and uncertainty means that Forex traders are looking for safety — and safety can’t be found in the euro right now.
After seeing some earlier gains and breaking back up through the 1.2600 level against the US dollar, euro is once again lower. The 17-nation currency has been unable to hold onto gains briefly enjoyed in the wake of positive economic data out of the United States. Now that optimism is gone, and traders are left with concerns about what’s next for the eurozone.
Investors are so seeking safety that they just bought 4.6 billion ...

Rupee Suffers on EU Summit & Poor Prospects for India’s Growth
The Indian rupee dropped today as a disagreement for the European leaders about a way to tackle the debt problems lead to risk aversion sentiment on the Forex market that hurt riskier currencies of emerging markets. Still, the currency managed to rebound at present.
As was expected, the summit of the European Union chiefs has not provided a positive result. And the rupee desperately needs a bullish story, but it has not found it in Europe and it is not likely to find it in India itself. The Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development predicted that India’s growth may remain “subdued” in the fiscal year through March 2013. Indeed, analysts forecast that the economy would expand 6.1 percent in the first quarter of this year from a year ago, at the same rate as in the previous ...

UK shares edge up cautiously from lows
(Reuters) - Britain's top shares rose on Thursday, clawing back some of the previous session's steep losses, though trade remained cautious after a European summit failed to produce concrete proposals for tackling the region's debt crisis.
Markets rallied earlier in the week on hopes that new proposals would be made at the informal summit, including ways of sparking economic growth and boosting investor confidence.
Thursday's economic data made for grim reading, with Britain falling deeper into recession than first thought in the first quarter after a sharp drop in construction output.
In Germany, the manufacturing sector shrank and business sentiment plummeted in May, heightening concerns about the ability of Europe's largest economy to weather the region's crisis.

EUR/USD Cedes The 1.2624 Support
Sunrise Market Commentary
- Fixed Income: Risk off pushes German bond yields to new lows
- Risk off sentiment pushed core bonds higher and non-core bond yield spreads re-widened substantially. The Summit didn't bring new information, but another hole found in Spain's regions' budgets might get attention today.
- Currencies EUR/USD cedes the 1.2624 support
- On Wednesday, the EMU debt crisis was again omnipresent. Markets feared that the EU leaders wouldn't be able to take decisive action to address the debt crisis. Extreme risk aversion pushed EUR/USD to a new low for 2012. The losses of EUR/GBP were more contained, as poor UK retail sales and rather soft BoE minutes kept the door open for more policy stimulation.

Persistent fears over debt crisis keep the euro near its lowest in 22 months
Investors continue to limit their risk exposure on Thursday, heading towards the safe haven dollar and the Japanese yen, as European leaders failed to adopt concrete actions during yesterday’s summit while manufacturing in China is seen shrinking for a seventh month in May according to HSBC.
With the risk of Greece exiting the euro zone not being eliminated by officials yesterday, the sentiment is seen negative, pushing the euro near the lowest since July 2010, especially after Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti backed French President Francois Hollande’s proposal of jointly underwrite regional bonds that Germany still opposes.
The risk remains subdued and markets trade with volatility today as data may show that Europe’s services and manufacturing industries shrank for a fourth month, ...
