Some frayed nerves as USDA grains data goes 'live'
(Reuters) - CBOT grain traders got their first taste on Thursday of trading without a two-hour cushion between the release of price-sensitive U.S. government data and markets being open, as the new 21-hour trading cycle exposed some frayed nerves.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued its weekly export sales report at 7:30 a.m. Central (1230 GMT) when the Chicago Board of Trade grain markets were open for business. The CBOT began a 21-hour trading cycle on Monday.
Rival Intercontinental Exchange (ICE.N) was also open, but its volume was far smaller than that of the world's largest grain exchange, owned by the CME Group (CME.O).
The data moved the corn futures market, with benchmark July slipping slightly lower in a knee-jerk reaction before rebounding after traders dug deeper into ...

Copper rises from 4-1/2 month low, EU crisis weighs
(Reuters) - London copper rose 0.8 percent on Thursday as the market took a breather after sinking to a 4-1/2 month low in the previous session on risk aversion triggered by worries over Greece's possible exit from the euro zone.
Copper, which has lost almost 10 percent this month, may find support from positive U.S. housing data, although gains were capped as the market remains vulnerable to the implications for the global economy after European leaders were unable to deliver meaningful measures to resolve the region's debt crisis.
"Prices of copper have come off quite heavily in recent weeks so there might be some sense that maybe it was an overreaction," said Alexandra Knight, an economist with National Australia Bank. "From my perspective Greece will ultimately stay in the euro zone ...

Gold lower but recovers some ground; trade eyes $1,525/oz
(Reuters) - Gold managed to recover most of the ground it lost in a brutal sell-off earlier on Wednesday even as sentiment and the euro remained fragile as European leaders met to discuss the deepening euro-zone debt crisis.
Gold tested key support levels for a second time in a week as a wave of selling hit commodities, the euro and equities, before bouncing off those lows in New York afternoon trading.
Money had piled into bonds and the dollar, assets considered low risk, on Wednesday ahead of a meeting of European Union leaders later in the day. The leaders are expected to discuss growth-boosting measures and the idea of a joint euro zone bond.
Spot gold prices dropped as low as $1,534.25 an ounce, down over 2 percent, as the euro slumped to its weakest against the dollar in nearly ...

Gold sinks over 2 percent; close to technical support
(Reuters) - Gold fell more than 2 percent on Wednesday as a wave of selling triggered by better-than-expected home sales and heightened by despair surrounding the euro zone sent prices toward key technical support levels and wiped out year-to-date gains.
Spot prices dropped as low as $1,534.25 an ounce, down 2.15 percent, by 12:08 p.m. EDT (1608 GMT), flirting with a bear market with a drop of 20 percent from September record highs.
Market players are watching whether gold can hold key technical support at $1,525 an ounce.
The sell-off took bullion back to December lows hit in last week's rampant selling and reignited concerns that a recovery in recent days was a "dead-cat bounce", slang used to describe a small, temporary rally that follows a significant decline.

Euro Rebound Short-Lived
Sunrise Market Commentary
- Fixed Income: Profit taking continued, but now concluded?
- The profit taking on global core bond markets continued in the run-up to tonight's informal EU-Summit. Spanish and Italian spreads decreased significantly but yields remain at elevated levels. Today, the eco calendar is again thin and trading will again be driven by sentiment.
- Currencies: Euro rebound short-lived On
- Tuesday, the euro came again under pressure even as the global context was not that negative. Sentiment on risk was constructive and intra-EMU spreads narrowed, but all this didn't prevent investors to use any upticks in the single currency to further reduce exposure. The key 1.2642/24 support is again coming within reach.

Gold slips in line with euro ahead of EU meeting
(Reuters) - Gold fell towards $1,550 an ounce in Europe, pressured by concerns that a European Union meeting later on Wednesday would fail to significantly ease worries over the euro zone debt crisis which lifted the dollar to a 21-month high against the euro.
The dollar, along with German bond futures, benefited from a flight from riskier assets, including stocks and commodities such as copper and oil.
Spot gold was down 0.1 percent at $1,555.50 an ounce at 0930 GMT while U.S. gold futures for June delivery were down $20.60 an ounce at $1,556.00.
"Gold is acting more as a risky asset, and everything is tumbling this morning ahead of this informal finance ministers meeting, where nothing good is really expected," Societe Generale analyst Robin Bhar said.

Euro hits 21-month low versus dollar before EU summit
(Reuters) - The euro hit a 21-month low against the dollar on Wednesday ahead of an EU meeting later, with investors doubtful that leaders would come up with measures to stem the euro zone debt crisis.
An informal EU summit is expected to discuss growth-boosting measures but was not expected to produce any plan that would restore optimism among investors, especially given Germany remains strongly opposed to joint euro bonds.
The euro fell to $1.2615, dropping below the 2012 low of $1.2624 set in January to mark its lowest since August 2010.
Fears that Greece may have to leave the euro grew after Dow Jones earlier quoted former prime minister Lucas Papademos as saying Greece had no choice but to stick with a painful austerity program or face a damaging exit from the euro zone.
However, ...
