Better Data Boosts Risk Appetite, Sending US Dollar Lower
US dollar is moving lower right now, thanks to improved risk appetite. Most of that risk appetite is coming from enthusiasm over better data in the United States. Improvements to the US economy are helping high beta currencies, even after continued disappointment in Europe and China.
Good news in the United States is providing a boost to high beta currencies, and sending the US dollar lower, as risk appetite returns to the markets. Jobless claims in the United States fell to 370,000 last week, dropping by 2,000. Additionally, there was a rise in US durable good orders of 0.2% for April. This good news is providing some relief from all of the bad news coming out of Europe.
The sovereign debt crisis continues to dominate in the eurozone as European Union leaders look for a way for Greece ...

Greek Exit Fears Weigh, Gold Bounces Epically
The euro (EUR) dropped to a 22-month low falling to 1.2545 from 1.2686 against the US dollar on a heightened risk aversion in the markets. Concerns that Greece may face a damaging default and a messy exit from the eurozone weighed on the single currency after talks said that Eurogroup was asked to prepare a Greek exit plan. Wednesday’s informal EU summit did little to restore sentiment in the market after it showed no progress on how EU leaders are planning to tackle the eurozone debt crisis but all agreed on the importance that Greece stays in the euro. France pushed a proposal of joint eurozone bonds, which can help with funding difficulties for some heavily-indebted eurozone countries but that policy is rejected by Germany.
The US dollar (USD) strengthened against a basket of ...

Asia Session: Policy Easing From Beijing May Not Save China If Greece Exits The Euro
Despite another below 50 print for Chinese flash manufacturing PMI and the release of NZ’s annual budget, market action was largely subdued during the session following the sell-off in the euro overnight which pushed it below 1.2600 against the dollar. The budget out of NZ was largely a non-event as it didn’t differ from market expectations, but the flash PMI figure out of China is somewhat worrying.
HSBC’s flash manufacturing PMI figure printed at 48.7 for May, modestly down from the prior 49.3. Thus, HSBC believes manufacturing in China may contract for the seventh straight month in row, which, if turn, raises concerns about the overall health of the Chinese economy.
Yet, we did not see commodities currencies and equities sink significantly after the data, but this may be because the ...

Gold hovers about $1,560 an ounce; Greece fear persists

EUR/USD Breaks 1.26 Level, Traders Running from Euro
The euro fell below the 1.26 level against the US dollar, reaching lowest level since July 2010. That level was considered to provide strong support to the shared 17-nation currency and, now that the support line is broken, traders are afraid that the currency would spiral down to even lower price.
The members of the European Union are meeting at summit today, but most analysts and traders are pessimistic about the outcome of the meeting. Germany still rejects the implementation of eurobonds even as other countries, including France, support the idea. Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, claimed that the European financial crisis will be discussed at tonight’s meeting in Brussels only “at the very end”.
The Bundesbank stated that a Greek exit “would be significant but ...

Euro Tanks as Greece Exit Considered More Likely
Euro is tanking today, heading lower as speculation about a Greek exit of the eurozone increases. Indeed, some think that there is a real threat for Greek withdrawal — and that such a withdrawal could prompt a domino effect that includes Spain and Italy later. Worries about what’s next for the eurozone are sending the 17-nation currency down across the board.
Recently, former Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos insisted that a Greek withdrawal from the eurozone is a very real threat, even as he tried to encourage Greek citizens to accept painful austerity measures. Concerns that Greece will be unable to remain in the eurozone are on the rise. Worries are triggering fears of a domino effect as well. Once the first country leaves the eurozone, it becomes easier for other countries to bail ...

Fitch Fires Another Round
Forex News and Events:
Fitch downgraded Japan by two notches yesterday afternoon from AA to A+ with outlook negative. The agency justified the credit rating cuts by saying that the Japanese government isn’t reactive enough in tackling its “high and rising public debt ratios”. The move came in a few hours after the OECD urged Japan to prioritize the implementation of a fiscal consolidation plan, as debt-to-GDP ratio exceeds 200 percent, and budget deficits are forecast at 10 percent of GDP for the current year. PM Yoshihiko Noda has staked his political career on a law to increase sales tax to 10% with the goal of offsetting rising social security costs mainly due to the fast ageing of the population. But the opposition that controls the upper house is refusing to negotiate and is ...
