European Data Lifted

Title: Weaker euro zone economy sends dollar higher
(Reuters) - The U.S. dollar climbed to a 20-month high and safe-haven German bonds set record low yields, after data showed Europe's economic woes intensifying as business confidence is undercut by talk of a Greek exit and slow progress in tackling the debt crisis. Private-sector factory activity in China also faltered in May as demand for exports fell, in a worrying sign the impact of the euro zone crisis could be undermining the global economic recovery. Europe is China's largest export market. But U.S. stock index futures have edged higher as investors remain hopeful that pending data on durable goods orders and initial jobless claims will show the world's largest economy is staying on track for recovery. The slowdown in economic activity in Europe's powerhouse Germany sent the euro ...

Title: Global stocks, euro fall on Greece exit worries
(Reuters) - World stocks skidded and the euro fell to a 21-month low on Wednesday on worries about Greece's possible exit from the euro zone, which threatened to deepen the region's debt crisis and hurt an already fragile global recovery. Nervous investors piled into low-risk U.S. and German government debt, sending their yields lower. The dollar also was favored as a safe haven by investors. Each euro zone country will have to prepare a contingency plan for the possibility of Greece's leaving the bloc, three euro zone sources told Reuters, citing an agreement reached by officials. A scramble for low-risk investments enabled Germany to pay no interest on 5 billion euros in new two-year debt amid the absence of new measures to tackle the region's debt crisis from a European leaders' ...

(Reuters) - Riskier assets retreated broadly on Wednesday as hopes for fresh measures to tackle the euro zone debt crisis faded and caution set in ahead of a meeting of European leaders, with sentiment hurt by renewed fears Greece would leave the euro bloc. Title: Asia Session: Wen Steals The Spotlight From The G8 Summit
The dollar and the yen were lower across the board as Chinese Premier Wen spurred hopes of more growth stimulating measures from Beijing. At the same time, equity markets were lifted by the risk-on sentiment, but gains were limited by lingering fears about a possible Greek exit from the euro. Furthermore, the G8 summit over the weekend failed to provide any guidance for investors, with those in attendance simply repeating well used comments about keeping the Eurozone intact and ensuring Greece doesn’t fall off a cliff. It now appears the countries in attendance are renewing calls for the larger and healthier Eurozone nations, like Germany, to assist their struggling neighbour countries, which comes at a time when debt markets appear to be questioning the health of Italy and Spain. Yet, ...

Title: Oil falls on euro zone worries, weak economic data
Brent crude oil slumped more than 2 percent on Thursday, touching the lowest price since December, as investors avoided risky assets due to mounting fears that turmoil in Greece could spread to other stressed euro zone economies. U.S. crude was down by less than Brent, which reduced Brent's premium against U.S. crude to below $15, from above $19 the previous session, as owners of the U.S. Seaway pipeline announced just after midday that its reversal was completed as expected. The initial flow of crude that will head for the main U.S. refining center in Houston was to occur by the weekend, a development aimed at easing the supply glut of U.S. crude at the delivery hub in Cushing, Oklahoma. Easing that glut should narrow the premium that Brent has enjoyed over U.S. crude. But market focus ...

Title: Dukascopy Afternoon Forex Overview : 05/17/2012

Title: Consumer shares lift Wall St, but Greece drags
Consumer shares led a modest rebound on Wall Street on Tuesday, after the S&P 500 fell for four of the past five sessions, but gains were capped as investors kept an eye on the political impasse in Greece. Quarterly results helped boost the S&P consumer discretionary sector index, with TJX (TJX.N) up 7.4 percent at $42.65 and Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS.N) up 9.2 percent at $51.59. The S&P retail sector index .RLX rose 1.5 percent. U.S. retail sales rose 0.1 percent in April, slightly below expectations. However, details in the Commerce Department's report indicating underlying strength in demand and a rebound in manufacturing activity in New York State calmed concerns that the economy was stalling. "Earnings have been pretty good and supporting the market to a certain degree," said John ...

Title: Gold lifts from 4-1/2 month low as euro recovers
Gold prices edged back towards $1,560 an ounce in Europe on Tuesday after a positive reading of German growth lifted the euro versus the dollar, and as physical buyers stepped in to take advantage of the metal's fall to 4-1/2 month lows. Gold remains vulnerable to more losses, however, as worries over the euro zone's future simmer in the background, keeping the single currency under pressure. Spot gold was up 0.1 percent at $1,557.80 an ounce at 05:24 a.m. EDT (0924 GMT), while U.S. gold futures for June delivery were down $3.50 an ounce at $1,557.50. Gold earlier hit its lowest since December 30 at $1,547.99 an ounce and is down more than 6 percent in May so far, on track for its worst monthly performance since December's washout, as talk that Greece could exit the euro zone spooked ...

Title: European shares boosted off lows by German data
European equities bounced up from 2012 lows on Tuesday, lifted by surprisingly strong German economic data, but concerns about the future of the euro zone and the possibility of Greece's exit from the bloc kept investors in a cautious mood. The FTSEurofirst 300 .FTEU3 was up 0.5 percent at 1,009.12 points at 03:03 a.m. EDT (0703 GMT) after sinking as far as 998.62 in the previous session to levels not seen since December 2011.
