Markets vs. Technocrats
Forex News and Events:
Over the past few days, the media has been relaying comments suggesting leaders are backing the stay of Greece in the EMU. For starters the G8 stressed the importance for Greece to remain in the monetary union regardless of the discord over how to best tackle the crisis. During an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, former Greek PM insisted that an exit would yield “catastrophic” consequences for the country itself and “far reaching” implications for the EU. During yesterday’s European session however, EU officials stated they have agreed over a teleconference call with Eurogroup Work Group (EWG) that each nation in the EMU must prepare an individual contingency plan in case of an exit. The EUR sank against the USD to its lowest level since July 2010 at 1.2544, down 5. ...

EUR/USD Cedes The 1.2624 Support
Sunrise Market Commentary
- Fixed Income: Risk off pushes German bond yields to new lows
- Risk off sentiment pushed core bonds higher and non-core bond yield spreads re-widened substantially. The Summit didn't bring new information, but another hole found in Spain's regions' budgets might get attention today.
- Currencies EUR/USD cedes the 1.2624 support
- On Wednesday, the EMU debt crisis was again omnipresent. Markets feared that the EU leaders wouldn't be able to take decisive action to address the debt crisis. Extreme risk aversion pushed EUR/USD to a new low for 2012. The losses of EUR/GBP were more contained, as poor UK retail sales and rather soft BoE minutes kept the door open for more policy stimulation.

European future equities rise before the opening today
European stock futures signaled a positive start before the opening today timing some of the loses witnessed in the past few days as European decision makers instated that Greece must stick to the austerity measures in order to stay in the euro zone and to prevent major problems.
Spain announced Wednesday evening a 9 billion euro bailout to rescue Bankia, at the same time that the Spanish government is seeking ways to help reform the indebted banking sector that threatens to pull the economy deep into the heart of the debt crisis.
As for FOREX markets, we can see that currencies are performing differently from European stocks as investors see that it`s not time to risk yet since concerns over the European economic growth dominates markets.

EUR/USD Falls to 21-Month Low
The EUR/USD fell as low as 1.2614 yesterday, a 21-month low, after investors grew increasingly concerned regarding Greece's fate in the euro-zone and shifted their funds to safe-haven assets. The currency pair staged a mild upward correction later in the day, eventually stabilizing around the 1.2655 level. Turning to today, euro traders will want to pay attention to several potentially significant news events. Specifically, the German Manufacturing PMI and Ifo Business Climate may help the euro recoup some of yesterday's losses if they come in above expectations.

Copper rises from 4-1/2 month low, EU crisis weighs
(Reuters) - London copper rose 0.8 percent on Thursday as the market took a breather after sinking to a 4-1/2 month low in the previous session on risk aversion triggered by worries over Greece's possible exit from the euro zone.
Copper, which has lost almost 10 percent this month, may find support from positive U.S. housing data, although gains were capped as the market remains vulnerable to the implications for the global economy after European leaders were unable to deliver meaningful measures to resolve the region's debt crisis.
"Prices of copper have come off quite heavily in recent weeks so there might be some sense that maybe it was an overreaction," said Alexandra Knight, an economist with National Australia Bank. "From my perspective Greece will ultimately stay in the euro zone ...

Global stocks, euro fall on Greece exit worries
(Reuters) - World stocks skidded and the euro fell to a 21-month low on Wednesday on worries about Greece's possible exit from the euro zone, which threatened to deepen the region's debt crisis and hurt an already fragile global recovery.
Nervous investors piled into low-risk U.S. and German government debt, sending their yields lower. The dollar also was favored as a safe haven by investors.
Each euro zone country will have to prepare a contingency plan for the possibility of Greece's leaving the bloc, three euro zone sources told Reuters, citing an agreement reached by officials.
A scramble for low-risk investments enabled Germany to pay no interest on 5 billion euros in new two-year debt amid the absence of new measures to tackle the region's debt crisis from a European leaders' ...
