After substantial gains on Tuesday, German benchmark DAX index was marginally up on Wednesday. At the moment of writing DAX index is 0.07% or 4.21 points up at 5,893.97. Among main decliners were German automakers BMW AG and Volkswagen AG tumbling 1.2% and 1% respectively.
USD
Dow Jones Industrial Average traded nearly flat on Tuesday following 427 point increase previous week. Blue chip index slipped 0.02% or 2.65 points closing at 12,291.35. Dow Jones was higher most of the session but retreated shortly ahead of closing as Sears announced about closing 120 of its stores.

European shares opened higher after Christmas holidays, though trading volumes are predicted to be relatively low. Stoxx 600 gained 0.2% at 242.41, whereas France's CAC 40 added 0.5% to 3,116.11. German benchmark DAX index surged 0.4% attaining 5,902.32. London markets stayed closed in prolonged holiday break.

The prices of real estate decreased more than predicted, said S&P/Case-Shiller group on Tuesday. S&P/Case-Shiller index of real estate value in 20 cities fell 3.4% in October compared to corresponding period last year. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg forecast a 3.2% decline. Index currently is down 32.1% compared to its top figure in 2006.

Greece's creditors are struggling against IMF pressure to accept greater losses on government bonds, said three persons familiar with matter. Lenders require government to issue new bonds worth €70 bn ($91 bn) with a coupon at around 5%. However, IMF is forcing creditors to take smaller coupon to cut Greek GDP ratio to 120% by 2020. Without write-downs Greece's debt burden will be nearly twice the amount of nation's GDP next year, said IMF spokesperson.

Jobless claims unexpectedly declined previous week reaching the lowest level since April 2008 indicating that US labour market is recovering. The ECB awarded €489 bn ($645 bn) in three-year loans, compared to previous expected estimate of €293 bn. In total 523 Euro Zone banks called for cash which will be provided at a cost equal current benchmark 1%. European debt turmoil has amplified risk of bank and government defaults, therefore financials became more reluctant to lend driving up borrowing costs. By providing cheap cash, ECB expects banks to expand lending.

German consumer climate index remained steady this month, according to industry data. The indicator remained unchanged at 5.6 not meeting the expectations of a decline to 5.5. However, despite better financial expectations, willingness to purchase decreased. After the data release, the Euro gained in value relative to the USD and the pair EUR/USD is currently traded at 1.3010, gaining 0.08%.

HTC was found guilty of Apple Inc.'s patent infringement. All phones that contain the technology stipulated by the Apple Inc. patent will be prohibited for sale at the US territory starting from 19 April, 2012. Initially Apple Inc. submitted 10 patent infringement claims but the court satisfied only one claim and the HTC is pleased with the court decision.
