The Weekly Bottom Line : 19/05/2012
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
United States
- Global economic concerns ratcheted up this week. Widespread discussion of a Greek exit continued, Spanish banks faced rating downgrades and periphery sovereign debt yields moved higher.
- Financial markets have responded to these global worries with increased risk aversion. The S&P is poised to end the week 3% lower, and 10-year treasuries are yielding just 1.7%.
- U.S. economic data has proved somewhat more encouraging, but growth is still struggling to breakout beyond a moderate pace. This has kept the possibility of additional monetary stimulus alive even if the threshold remains quite high.
Canada
- Recent economic indicators are showing a resurgence of strength in the Canadian economy. Strong ...

Wall Street flat after Facebook IPO fizzles
Stocks were little changed on Friday, reversing earlier gains after Facebook Inc (FB.O) stumbled in its market debut after a delayed opening.
Shares of the social networking giant were volatile in early trading, falling to near breakeven levels after early gains of more than 10 percent. In early trading it was the Nasdaq's most actively traded stock, with more than 100 million shares traded in the first five minutes of trading.
After a delay in the opening print that drove up anxiety levels among traders and onlookers outside the Nasdaq, the company's closely watched stock began trading at $42.05, compared with an IPO price of $38. It rose as high as $45 before pulling back.
The Nasdaq said it was investigating an issue in delivering trade execution messages from the IPO cross in ...

Euro slides on Greece, banking sector worries
The euro slid to a four-month low against the dollar on Thursday and was expected to remain under pressure as concerns grow about problems facing some periphery euro zone banks and the prospect of contagion if Greece exits the euro.
Growing aversion to risk drove investors towards the safety of the U.S. dollar, which rose to a four-month high against a basket of currencies, while the euro also dropped to a three-month low versus the yen.
Talk of possible Spanish bank downgrades pushed European equities .FTEU3 sharply lower. Shares in Spanish lender Bankia fell more than 20 percent following a report in the El Mundo newspaper that its customers had withdrawn more than 1 billion euros from their accounts over the past week.
This followed news on Wednesday that the European Central Bank ...

Speculation On Grexit Continues To Hammer The Euro
Sunrise Market Commentary
- Fixed Income: Global core bonds profit from euro debt crisis
- Concerns about Greece and Spain underpinned the ongoing rally of global core bonds. The German 10-year yield fell below 1.50%. Intra-EMU yield spreads versus Germany widened substantially. Today, the eco calendar is enticing. If no euro debt crisis news acts as a circuit breaker, the eco data may for once drive the price action.
- Currencies: Speculation on Grexit continues to hammer the euro.
- At the start of the new trading week, the Greek crisis remained the key factor for currency trading. With no visibility on the outcome of the EMU crisis, the easiest way for the euro is south. EUR/USD set a new correction low. EUR/GBP dropped below the 0.8000. This morning, strong German ...

Euro dips to four-month low as Greek impasse fans exit worry
The euro slipped to a four-month low against the dollar on Tuesday as a political stalemate in Greece stoked fear the country may renege on bailout pledges made to international creditors and exit the currency bloc.
Concerns about slowing Chinese and global growth also drove down higher-yielding currencies and boosted the safe-haven dollar and yen, with the Australian dollar flirting with a five-month low against the U.S. currency.
Greek Party leaders are expected to convene at 2 p.m. (1100 GMT) but there is little hope President Karolos Papoulias's proposal to form a technocrat government would end the stalemate, making a new election the most likely outcome.
Many market players think a fresh election will make it more likely for Athens to ditch its bailout pledges and hence the euro, ...

Euro drops to near 4-month low on Greek deadlock
The euro fell to a nearly four-month low against the dollar on Monday on fears Greece could exit the euro and worries that weak industrial data signaled that Europe was heading for recession.
Concerns about slowing Chinese and global growth also drove down higher-yielding currencies and boosted the safe-haven dollar and yen. The Australian dollar fell to a five-month low against the greenback, while the New Zealand dollar dropped to a 4-1/2-month trough.
Greece's political impasse, as a major Greek leftist party refused to join a unity government or create a government of technocrats, also pushed the country's sovereign spreads over German bunds to their widest level since November.
Greece's troubles helped drive up Spain's and Italy's borrowing costs. Spain's bill auctions also showed ...

Safe-haven currencies, including the dollar and the Japanese yen, rose as coalition talks in Greece hit an impasse on Sunday, increasing the chance of another election.
Euro-zone industrial production unexpectedly fell in March, adding to signs the bloc is heading into recession, further fuelling bearish sentiment, while Spain's short-term debt costs rose at auction and its 10-year yields soared.

Global shares, euro hit as political risks pile up
Uncertainty over the impact of a potential Greek exit from the euro on the debt-laden 17-nation currency bloc drove a rush to safety by investors on Monday, sending the single currency to near four month lows and European shares down 1.5 percent.
Problematic negotiations on forming a new Greek government have increased the chances it will be unable to meet the conditions of its bailout deal, and a worsening fiscal position in Spain has added to the sense of crisis facing the region.
The list of political risks facing the euro area grew on Sunday when German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives suffered a crushing defeat in an election in Germany's most populous state.
