Title: Gold prices rise 1 percent as dollar retreats
(Reuters) - Gold rose 1 percent on Thursday, snapping three days of losses to climb towards $1,580 an ounce, as the dollar swung back into negative territory versus the euro after a softer-than-expected U.S. manufacturing report. Confidence in the single currency remains fragile after it earlier hit a near two-year low against the dollar. Dire German manufacturing and business climate data spooked investors already weighing up the risk of Greece leaving the euro zone. But gold got a lift from International Monetary Fund data showing another rise in central bank gold holdings in April, after the largest purchase in over four years by the Philippines. Spot gold rose as high as $1,577.50 an ounce and was up 0.8 percent to $1,573.11 an ounce by 9:50 a.m. EDT (1350 GMT), while U.S. gold ...

Title: Kiwi Pauses Decline, Can It Keep Gains?
The New Zealand dollar stalled its declined and rebounded today on speculations that losses were excessive. Gains were limited, though, as the disagreement between European leaders hurt demand for higher-yielding assets. Losses were indeed big as the kiwi (the nickname of New Zealand’s currency) was falling since the beginning of May against the greenback and since the beginning of March versus the yen. In fact, just yesterday the currency touched the lowest level this year. The NZ dollar had a bit of good news today as the traded balance surplus widened to NZ$355 million in April from NZ$186 million in March. Nevertheless, the adverse global economic environment caused by Europe’s woes is likely to keep the kiwi from running much higher. NZD/USD was up from 0.7516 to 0.7546 as of 11:02 ...

Title: Markets Ignore Pessimistic Data after China Commits to Boost Growth
After the huge selloff seen through the week, markets returned once again to correct some of the losses incurred supported by the Chinese commitment to support growth and revive the recovery, where investors ignore the heavy load of pessimistic data as Greece still the highlight in markets amid the disappointing informal European Summit yesterday. Surely, the sentiment is still negative and markets are to resume the bearish wave, but currently markets react to the positive Chinese announcement as the nation pledged to implement more and more measures to boost growth and revive the slowing pace of recovery, noting that China used to lead the pace of recovery worldwide. Another bullish fact for markets today is the durable goods report from the world`s largest economy, where the critical ...

Title: U.K. first-quarter GDP downwardly revised to add to worries
U.K. GDP first quarter reading showed worse than expected contraction, adding to concerns the British economy needs more time to recover amid the escalating European debt crisis and weak consumer demand. The preliminary reading was downwardly revised to 0.3% contraction from both advanced and expected readings of -0.2%, while on the year 0.1% contraction was recorded from both flash and estimated readings of 0.0%. Details with the release showed that the quarterly drop was triggered by the drop in exports to 0.1% from 1.6% while imports, on the other hand, advanced 0.4% from 0.9%. In fact, the drop in exports reflect the weak demand from the euro area, U.K.’s main trading partner, and worldwide in addition to the strengthening sterling in the first quarter. Gross fixed capital ...

Title: U.K. GDP expected unrevised as recession keeps weight on BoE
The United Kingdom today continues to release more important fundamentals that only reassure the lingering hurdles ahead of policy makers` next decision. The second reading for the first quarter GDP is expected unrevised today as the economy contracts with slowing capital investment and exports that were hit by weak global growth. The ONS is expected to report the unrevised quarterly contraction of 0.2% in the first three months of the year and hold flat on the year as the BoE suffers to support growth. With the deterioration in the jobs market and high inflation Britons remain under pressure and so far policy makers. As the MPC said it, we are against a tough task, especially after they raised short term inflation expectations and revised lower growth estimates in the May inflation ...

Title: Greek Exit Fears Weigh, Gold Bounces Epically
The euro (EUR) dropped to a 22-month low falling to 1.2545 from 1.2686 against the US dollar on a heightened risk aversion in the markets. Concerns that Greece may face a damaging default and a messy exit from the eurozone weighed on the single currency after talks said that Eurogroup was asked to prepare a Greek exit plan. Wednesday’s informal EU summit did little to restore sentiment in the market after it showed no progress on how EU leaders are planning to tackle the eurozone debt crisis but all agreed on the importance that Greece stays in the euro. France pushed a proposal of joint eurozone bonds, which can help with funding difficulties for some heavily-indebted eurozone countries but that policy is rejected by Germany. The US dollar (USD) strengthened against a basket of ...

Title: EU Summit to no surprise disappoints pushing euro below $1.26 ahead of PMI
The EU informal summit on Wednesday again failed to address the heightened tension across global markets over the outlook for euro stability, no decisions were taken and only disagreement emerged out of the introductory dinner for Hollande to European procrastination and not unity! Heavy downward pressure is still seen on the euro as it slumped against its major peers and trading just above a two-year low this morning versus the dollar after it slumped to the lowest since July 2010 on Wednesday at $1.2545 as the leaders added nothing new and further pinned the fears of a Greek collapse out of the euro. Although former Greek Prime Minister said that there are no preparations in place for a Greek euro exit that he is aware of; news reports yesterday proclaimed the opposite based and ...

Title: Euro stuck near 22-month low on Greek exit worry
(Reuters) - The euro hovered just above its 22-month low against the dollar on Thursday and remained vulnerable to further declines as the prospect of a Greek exit from the euro zone kept investors on tenterhooks. The euro eased 0.1 percent to $1.2575. It fell to about $1.2545 the previous day, its lowest level since July 2010. That level should provide initial support, followed by $1.2500. The euro drew little comfort from an informal summit of European Union leaders that shed no new light on how the euro zone nations intend to tackle its debt crisis, including the threat of Greece's exit from euro. "It's still hard to see what the endgame will be like," said a trader at a Japanese bank in Tokyo. European Union leaders urged Greece to stay the course on austerity and complete the ...
