Over the past few days, the media has been relaying comments suggesting leaders are backing the stay of Greece in the EMU. For starters the G8 stressed the importance for Greece to remain in the monetary union regardless of the discord over how to best tackle the crisis. During an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, former Greek PM insisted that an exit would yield “catastrophic” consequences for the country itself and “far reaching” implications for the EU. During yesterday’s European session however, EU officials stated they have agreed over a teleconference call with Eurogroup Work Group (EWG) that each nation in the EMU must prepare an individual contingency plan in case of an exit. The EUR sank against the USD to its lowest level since July 2010 at 1.2544, down 5. ...

Forex News and Events:
Yesterday’s European session was a breather for the Euro area as German GDP came in much better than expected at 0.5% q-o-q. The strength of Germany’s numbers pulled EU’s GDP higher to 0.0% against a forecast -0.2%, avoiding a technical recession after last quarter’s -0.3% GDP. Nevertheless, both German and Euro zone economic sentiments were lower, underscoring a fading institutional optimism over economic health. GDP for the biggest European economies after Germany were worrisome, with France generating no growth in the first quarter of 2012 while Italy and Spain’s economies contracted by 0.8% and 0.3% respectively over the same period. The situation in Greece is still moving towards a new round of elections with Independent Greeks party leader Kammemos announcing ...

Greek Political Impasse Leads to Euro Losses
The euro started off yesterday's trading session on a positive note following a better than expected German Prelim GDP figure which caused the EUR/USD to advance to 1.2868. That being said, the common currency came under pressure later in the day following another failed attempt by Greek politicians to form a new government, virtually guaranteeing new elections will take place next month. As a result, the euro fell as low as $1.2769 during the afternoon sessoin. Turning to today, traders will want to pay attention to the US FOMC Meeting Minutes, set to be released at 18:00 GMT. Any signs that the Federal Reserve is preparing for another round of quantitative easing could result in the greenback turning bearish.

Is Germany Starting To Crack?
The European morning session has been fairly volatile for FX markets, with the euro starting off looking fairly well supported at 1.32 and then falling through the floor on the back of some weak Eurozone economic data. The first blow to the single currency came from Germany where it was reported that the unemployment rate jumped by 19,000 in April and the unemployment rate had been revised up to 6.8% from 6.7% for March, which is where it remained last month. This is the largest increase in German unemployment for three years. Although a German labour market official said the decline could be down to the timing of Easter, it was enough to spook the markets.

The other blow to hit the market was the fall in the German manufacturing PMI survey to 46.2, the ...
