Pound Falls as CPI & HPI Drop

The consumer price index was 3.0 percent in April on an annual basis, down from 3.5 percent in the month before. The house price index fell 0.4 percent in March from a year ago, compared to the expected increase by 0.5 percent and the February growth by 1.0 percent. The index declined 0.6 percent on a monthly basis. The International Monetary Fund recommended the BoE to add stimulus for the UK economy.

Canadian Dollar Drops Against US Dollar on Risk Aversion
Risk aversion is the Forex market driver today, thanks to the Fitch downgrade of Japan. Even though equities aren’t being much affected by the latest news, currencies are. High beta currencies like the Canadian dollar are dropping, thanks to a desire for safe haven. Loonie is headed lower against the US dollar today, even though its own credit rating is remains solid.
Canada retains the highest credit rating with all the agencies, but that isn’t helping the Canadian dollar today on the Forex market. The Japan downgrade has shaken things up a bit, and the US dollar is gaining against the loonie today. However, even though the Canadian dollar is down against the greenback, it is up against other high beta currencies, including the UK pound.
With the situation in Europe so uncertain, it isn’ ...

Euro falls vs. dollar as EU summit hopes dim
(Reuters) - The euro fell against the dollar on Tuesday after two days of gains as investors pared back expectations that an informal meeting of European leaders would yield much progress in tackling the region's debt crisis.
However, given the market's stretched bearish positioning and oversold signals on the technical charts, the euro could see a short-term squeeze higher ahead of the European summit.
While there have been hopes in some quarters that Wednesday's summit may lead to agreement on measures to boost growth, investors were not confident of a breakthrough given apparent differences in opinion between Germany and France.
French President Francois Hollande is expected to push for a joint euro zone bond, a measure backed by Italy, Spain and the European Commission.

Yen Slides as Fitch Downgrades Japan
The Japanese yen fell today as Fitch Ratings downgraded Japan’s sovereign credit rating because country’s actions to reduce public huge public debt are too slow.
Fitch cut Japan’s long-term foreign-currency rating from AA to A+ and lowered the local-currency grade from to AA- A+. The outlooks on both rankings are negative. Some financial specialists recommended buying the yen against the dollar. They are reasoning that the yen is too attractive amid present turbulent times and the currency would bounce back rather soon.
USD/JPY was up from 79.29 to 79.83 and EUR/JPY rose from 101.62 to 101.96 as of 12:08 GMT today.

Euro falls as hopes dim of EU summit progress
(Reuters) - The euro fell on Tuesday as skepticism grew that an informal meeting of European leaders would yield much progress in tackling the debt crisis, with worries about Greek politics and Spanish banking problems expected to keep the currency weak.
While there have been hopes in some quarters that measures to boost growth may be agreed at Wednesday's summit, investors were not confident of a breakthrough given apparent differences in opinion between Germany and France.
French President Francois Hollande is expected to push for a joint euro zone bond, a measure backed by Italy, Spain and the European Commission.
However Germany, Europe's largest economy and paymaster, has so far opposed the move and continues to champion austerity measures. A German official said on Tuesday euro ...

The Endgame of the Greek Crisis
Forex News and Events:
It has taken two-and-a-half years, and nearly USD 300bn of IMF/EU funds for markets to finally weigh in a more probable than not exit of the debt-laden country. Greece’s EMU exit is imminent for the second time in the last six months. Surprisingly though, the trigger for the recent gloomy expectations for Greece was not exclusively of an economic nature but also politics. During May 6 elections, the Greeks expressed their unwillingness to abide by the agreed-upon austerity measures. It wouldn’t have been a very dangerous position had Greece been solvent, but regardless of EU officials’ reassurance of continued help for Greece throughout the process, the country would run out of funds for the next installments due end of June and early July. In addition to markets ...

Fitch downgrades Japan’s credit rating
On Tuesday Fitch Ratings lowered Japan’s sovereign credit rating by one notch with a negative outlook on fears that the nation will find difficulty in cutting its huge debt load amid political deadlock.
Japan’s long-term foreign currency rating was cut to A plus from AA, while the local currency rating was cut to A plus from AA minus.
Both were placed with negative outlook as the agency warned that more downgrades could be possible if the government does not take action to tackle the ballooning debt and take appropriate fiscal measures to stabilize public finances.
The rating from Fitch for Japan is now the lowest between the three major rating agencies as the nation’s debt stands at nearly twice the size of the $5 trillion economy and the worst among the industrialized countries.

Copper falls as dollar firms, debt crisis weighs
(Reuters) - Copper fell on Tuesday as the dollar firmed and uncertainty about Europe's ability to resolve its debt crisis outweighed reports that top metals consumer China will fast-track infrastructure investment.
Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange touched a week-high of $7,816 a metric ton (1.1 ton) in the session, before erasing gains to $7,712 at 5:37 a.m. EDT (0937 GMT), down 0.2 percent from Monday's $7,731 close.
One of the price supports for copper on Tuesday was a report in the state-backed China Securities Journal that Beijing will fast track its approval of infrastructure investments to combat slowing growth and a sluggish property sector. Copper is used extensively in construction.
Premier Wen Jiabao has also called for additional efforts to support growth, ...
