Confidence Across Markets

Title: EU Summit to no surprise disappoints pushing euro below $1.26 ahead of PMI
The EU informal summit on Wednesday again failed to address the heightened tension across global markets over the outlook for euro stability, no decisions were taken and only disagreement emerged out of the introductory dinner for Hollande to European procrastination and not unity! Heavy downward pressure is still seen on the euro as it slumped against its major peers and trading just above a two-year low this morning versus the dollar after it slumped to the lowest since July 2010 on Wednesday at $1.2545 as the leaders added nothing new and further pinned the fears of a Greek collapse out of the euro. Although former Greek Prime Minister said that there are no preparations in place for a Greek euro exit that he is aware of; news reports yesterday proclaimed the opposite based and ...

Title: Shares up on Europe summit hopes, euro dips
(Reuters) - World shares gained for a second day on Tuesday amid speculation of fresh action by European leaders to tackle the region's debt crisis, even as the euro fell on doubts that much would come of this week's meeting. A rise in existing home sales to their highest annual rate in nearly two years in April and a decline in foreclosures added to the positive tone in equity markets. The National Association of Realtors said existing home sales increased 3.4 percent to an annual rate of 4.62 million units, the highest since May 2010. Across the U.S., the median price for a home resale jumped to $177,400 in April, up 10.1 percent from a year earlier. "The housing market is showing some signs of life and the April number suggests that sales of single-family homes are rising again," ...

Title: Shares, euro steady but Greek worries weigh
(Reuters) - European shares took a breather from last week's sell-off and the single currency steadied on Monday, but investors were wary after a weekend meeting of Group of Eight leaders failed to ease concerns about the risk of Greece exiting the euro. The FTSE Eurofirst .FTEU3 index of top European shares edged up 0.2 percent at 972.09 points after losing 5.1 percent last week to reach its lowest level in five months. "There has to be a resolution around Greece before any sort of confidence comes back to the markets," Andrew Wells, Global Chief Investment Officer, Fixed Income, at Fidelity Worldwide Investment. The euro was off about 0.1 percent to $1.2770, moving away from the four-month low of $1.2642 hit on Friday, which was not far from its lowest point for 2012. Asian shares ...

Title: Weekly Economic and Financial Commentary : 19/05/2012
U.S. Review To QE3 or Not To QE3: That is the Question - Some market participants are beginning to speculate about another round of quantitative easing. Although recent growth indicators have not been particularly stellar, the economy is still growing. Moreover, core CPI inflation in the neighborhood of 2 percent means that the threshold for more QE is relatively high. - Overall, indicators were positive during the week. Housing starts increased by 2.6 percent in April, the Empire Manufacturing index improved to 17.09 in May from a 6.56 print in April and retail sales printed a 0.1 percent increase in April, in line with expectations. To QE3 or Not To QE3: That is the Question QE3 seems to have more lives that a cat; it comes back into the forefront of the U.S. economy discussion ...

Title: The Weekly Bottom Line : 19/05/2012
The Weekly Bottom Line : 19/05/2012 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK United States - Global economic concerns ratcheted up this week. Widespread discussion of a Greek exit continued, Spanish banks faced rating downgrades and periphery sovereign debt yields moved higher. - Financial markets have responded to these global worries with increased risk aversion. The S&P is poised to end the week 3% lower, and 10-year treasuries are yielding just 1.7%. - U.S. economic data has proved somewhat more encouraging, but growth is still struggling to breakout beyond a moderate pace. This has kept the possibility of additional monetary stimulus alive even if the threshold remains quite high. Canada - Recent economic indicators are showing a resurgence of strength in the Canadian economy. Strong ...

Title: Pressures intensify on European leaders
Confidence is already in short supply in financial markets and could evaporate further in the coming week if investors judge that Europe's often fractious political leaders aren't mapping out a sustainable path through the current crisis. Over the past week investors have been rocked by the increased likelihood of Greece leaving the euro, and an admission by one of the world's more highly regarded banks, JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N), of an embarrassing failure in risk management. Many in the markets are now looking to Europe's political leaders to signal a shift in the German-led austerity drive across Europe which they now see as threatening the fragile recovery underway in the world economy if cuts are not tempered with some efforts to encourage growth. Credit rating agency Fitch put the ...

Title: Gold hits 4-month low as dollar rises, stocks slide
Gold prices fell to a four-month low on Friday as worries over the financial health of Greece and Spain and huge trading losses for JPMorgan hurt stock markets and the euro, prompting investors to seek refuge in the dollar. Investors liquidated gold holdings to cover losses on other markets, analysts said, as a rise in risk aversion sparked selling across assets seen as higher risk, while lifting the U.S. currency and safe-haven German Bunds. Spot gold slid to $1,573.29 an ounce, its weakest since January 3, after support gave way at $1,579, and was down 0.7 percent at $1,582.19 an ounce at 1145 GMT. Prices pared the worst of their losses as hopes that a Greek government may be formed soon lifted the euro from lows, but spot prices were still down nearly 4 percent so far this week, ...

Title: Volatility Extends in Markets after the European Commission Fresh Forecasts
The European Commission supported volatility to extend in the market amid the current deteriorating sentiment in the market, where the Commission revised growth forecast lower for the euro-area region adding concerns the current austerity-linked solution is weighing sharply on growth, forcing more pressures on lawmakers to find another way around to hammer that debt crisis as well as boosting growth, but without adopting further austerity. The critical economic situation in Europe is worsening and getting more complicated, where lawmakers cannot find a way to fight the debt crisis without affecting growth aspects, where the sharp austerity adopted across Europe has brought a technical recession confirmed in most of the nations in the euro zone, fueling the debt crisis to expand further ...
