Title: Europe Steps Closer to the Cliff Edge
The Week Ahead Highlights Europe steps closer to the cliff edge Can the USD extend its rally? Bank of Japan may extend maturity of its bond buys Pricing in more QE from the Bank of England Europe steps closer to the cliff edge It was a pivotal week for the Eurozone after Greece announced that it was heading back to the polls after the top three parities failed to form a coalition government. So now Greece is leaderless, there is a caretaker government in place but it won't be able to enforce the austerity required to get the next tranche of bailout funds necessary for Greece to avoid running out of money in July. So as time runs out for Greece the European authorities have been clear: the upcoming election is a referendum on euro-membership. Either vote for pro bailout ...

Title: Euro at four month low against dollar as crisis spins
The euro hit a four-month low against the dollar and 3-1/2 month trough versus the yen on Friday as concerns about a chaotic Greek exit from the euro zone and instability in the Spanish banking system fuelled demand for safer currencies. Investors were reluctant to buy riskier assets after Moody's cut the credit ratings of 16 Spanish banks on Thursday. Fellow ratings agency Fitch downgraded Greece deeper into junk territory. The euro tumbled to $1.2642, within sight its 2012 low of $1.2624. It has shed 4.1 percent against the dollar so far in May, while demand for the highly liquid dollar pushed it up 0.3 percent against a basket of currency .DXY on the day to a four-month peak of 81.758. Against the yen, the euro fell to 100.219 yen, its lowest level since early February. Many ...

Title: London copper inches above 4-month lows; euro zone weighs
London copper peeked above four-month lows on Friday on short-covering and signs that Greeks are warming to pro-austerity parties, allaying some fears the country could leave the euro zone. Still, worries about Spain's finances and reports of Chinese copper inflows onto the London Metal Exchange (LME) will likely cap gains in the session. Three-month LME copper inched up 0.4 percent to $7,682 a metric ton (1.1023 tons) by 00:25 a.m. EDT, after closing almost flat in the previous session. The most active August copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (ShFE) fell 0.3 percent to 55,580 yuan ($8,800) a tonne, a partial rebound after a steeper fall at the open. The Shanghai contract rose 1.9 percent on Thursday, much more than its London counterpart, after diving on Wednesday to ...

Title: Oil falls on euro zone worries, weak economic data
Brent crude oil slumped more than 2 percent on Thursday, touching the lowest price since December, as investors avoided risky assets due to mounting fears that turmoil in Greece could spread to other stressed euro zone economies. U.S. crude was down by less than Brent, which reduced Brent's premium against U.S. crude to below $15, from above $19 the previous session, as owners of the U.S. Seaway pipeline announced just after midday that its reversal was completed as expected. The initial flow of crude that will head for the main U.S. refining center in Houston was to occur by the weekend, a development aimed at easing the supply glut of U.S. crude at the delivery hub in Cushing, Oklahoma. Easing that glut should narrow the premium that Brent has enjoyed over U.S. crude. But market focus ...

Title: Crude above $93.00 on reversal of the Seaway pipeline
Caution is still keeping sentiment subdued on Thursday, although Japan witnessed a better than expected growth in the first quarter, while the ECB limited its exposure to risk as fears over Greece continue, yet crude slightly rose. Greece is closer to exiting the euro zone, after attempts to form a new government failed, leading to new election on June 17, during which the far-left anti-bailout party Syriza is expected to win, putting the euro at risk. Moreover, the trading losses suffered by JPMorgan surged in recent days surpassing the bank’s initial $2 billion estimate by at least $1 billion, while Spain fell into recession in this year’s first quarter. However the Japan`s economy grew 1.0% during this year’s first quarter compared with -0.2% previous, on solid consumer spending, ...

Title: Jobless claims hold steady at 370,000
New claims for unemployment benefits were unchanged last week, according to government data on Thursday that will do little to ease concerns about a recent slowdown in jobs growth. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits held steady at a seasonally adjusted 370,000, the Labor Department said. The prior week's figure was revised up to 370,000 from the previously reported 367,000. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims falling to 365,000 last week. The four-week moving average for new claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends, fell 4,750 to 375,000. The data comes on the heels of three straight months of slowing employment gains. Companies added 115,000 new jobs to their payrolls in April, the fewest in six months. Thursday's report on claims covered ...

Title: Greece Fears Pressure, BoE Cuts Growth Forecast
Greece Fears Pressure, BoE Cuts Growth Forecast The euro (EUR) recovered a little yesterday against the dollar edging higher to 1.2758 from 1.2681 as risk sentiment in the market improved slightly. Investors remain worried about Greece's ability to avoid bankruptcy and stay in the euro ahead of Greece's second election. Greece put a senior judge Panagiotis Pikramenos to be the leader of the Greek caretaker government until election on June 17. The single currency may remain under pressure on fears that a Greek exit from the euro may have a serious impact on countries such as Spain, Italy and Portugal. Some Greek banks were moved to an emergency funding assistance program due to the deteriorating quality of their capital. The US dollar (USD) strengthened against a basket of currencies ...

Title: Higher Yielding Currencies Maintain Bearish Trend
Higher Yielding Currencies Maintain Bearish Trend Higher yielding currencies, namely the EUR and AUD, remained bearish during European trading yesterday, as fears that Greece will have to leave the euro-zone led to risk aversion in the marketplace. Investors are now worried about what the possible effects of a Greek exit from the euro-zone would be for other indebted countries, including Spain and Italy. Today, traders will want to note that there is a bank holiday in France, Germany and Switzerland. That being said, news out of the US may lead to market volatility. The Unemployment Claims figure and Philly Fed Manufacturing Index are both forecasted to show US economic growth. If true, the USD could see gains during the afternoon session. Economic News USD - Manufacturing Data Could ...
