Title: U.K. retail sales drop to record low, Miles maintains his call for further stimulus
U.K. retail sales unexpectedly dropped the most in more than two years in the month of April, reflecting the weakness in consumer spending that did not improve despite the drop in prices. The reading with auto fuel tumbled 2.3% in April from a revised of 2.0% and median expectations of -0.8%, while the reading excluding auto fuel also plunged 1.0% from a revised of 1.6%. On the yearly basis, the reading with auto fuel plummeted 1.1% from a revised of 3.1%. The drop is attributed to the heavy rainfall which slashed demand for clothing while fuel sales retreated. Still, the economy is unable to get on the right path of recovery due to the ongoing weakness in household spending and the escalating European debt crisis. The most recent data showed that the British economy fell back into ...

Title: Japan Policy On Hold, Eyes On BoE Minutes
The euro (EUR) dropped near a 21-month low falling to 1.2645 from 1.2814 against the US dollar as risk aversion dominates the markets. Comments from former Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos raised concerns after he said that Greece has two options, stick to a painful austerity program or face a damaging default and a messy exit from the eurozone. Focus now turns to today’s informal EU summit where France is expected to push a proposal of joint eurozone bonds. The idea of joint bonds can help with funding difficulties for some heavily-indebted eurozone countries but that policy has been rejected by Germany before. EU leaders are also expected to focus more on growth and ways to help Greece stay in the euro. The US dollar (USD) strengthened against a basket of currencies as fears of a ...

Title: Strengthened dollar
Today a mix of sentiments were spread throughout the day on a local and global scale as we watched Facebook Inc. retreating and investors speculating that China and Europe will stimulate growth, yet optimism was the major sentiment felt on the U.S soil mainly after that the superpower`s existing home sales jumped by 3.4 percent in April; a clear sign of recent stability within the housing market. Accordingly we watch the dollar strengthen on this unexpected cheerful data to therefore see the Dollar index which measures the performance of the U.S. dollar against a basket of currencies including the Euro, the Pound, and the Yen, rose to currently trade at 81.27 recording its highest level at 81.38 and its lowest at 80.92 As a result the euro fell against the dollar and remains on plunging ...

Title: European shares rise on China`s plan to bolster growth, before EU summit
European shares rise on Tuesday midday trading on plans from China to bolster growth and on hopes European leaders will do more to tackle crisis when they gather at tomorrow`s informal EU Summit. China is looking forward to accelerating the consent of infrastructure projects as well as allocating construction funding to reinvigorate growth. On the other hand, before the awaited EU summit on May 25, German and French Finance Ministers said on Monday they agreed "to do everything to keep Greece in the euro club." Tomorrow`s summit will tackle fiscal crisis and discuss the Greek issue, where new measures such as launching Eurobonds are expected to be on the table. However, still there are worries after Spain had sold debt with higher yield and the OECD lowered euro area growth forecasts. ...

Title: U.K. inflation hits government`s upper limit for the first time since February 2010
Today`s U.K. data showed that CPI for the year ended April retreated again to 3.0%, below forecasts of 3.1%, from the prior reading of 3.5%, hitting the government`s upper limit for the first time since February 2010. The drop was triggered by the Easter holiday and prices changes in the transport, alcohol and clothing categories. Yet, on the monthly basis the reading showed a rise to 0.6% from 0.3%. Other inflation gages showed a drop also as retail price index slipped to 3.5% on the annual basis from 3.6% while surged to 0.7% from 0.4% on the month. Last week, the BoE said in the quarterly inflation report that inflation outlook remains uncertain, where the bank referred that "near-term outlook is judged to be somewhat higher than expected three months ago, with inflation now ...

Title: Euro Rebounds, Focus On The UK Inflation
The euro (EUR) edged higher to 1.2824 rebounding from 1.2724 against the US dollar on hopes that EU leaders will agree on steps to fight the debt crisis in Europe. Investors expect the French President Francois Hollande to suggest joint eurozone bonds at the EU meeting in Brussels on May 23. The idea of joint bonds can help with funding difficulties for some heavily-indebted eurozone countries but that policy has been rejected by Germany before. EU leaders are also expected to focus more on growth and ways to help Greece stay in the euro. The single currency remains under pressure as the market is worried about Spain’s growing financial problems as well as developments in Greece ahead of a repeat election in June. The US dollar (USD) stumbles against a basket of currencies on an improved ...

Title: Major pairs currently narrow trading
Today on a daily scale we watched on one hand the yen plunging in front of most of its conterparts after that it was speculated that the Bank of Japan will add stimulus this week to support the country`s growth while that on the other hand the euro gained prior losses against the dollar as the German Finance Minister announced that "everything necessary" will be done by France and Germany to keep Greece in the Union. Yet so far some technical movements are taking place throughout the currencies market within the U.S session to accordingly watch the major pairs and currencies narrow trade and therefore the dollar index, which measures the dollar performance against a basket of currencies including the Euro, the Pound, and the Yen is actually consolidating on the four-hour and one-hour ...

Title: Euro Rebounds But Still Under Pressure
The euro (EUR) edged higher to 1.2812 rebounding from a four-month low at 1.2641 against the US dollar. The single currency tumbled on Friday on concerns over Greece’s political uncertainty as well as growing instability in the Spanish banking sector. European leaders of G8 met during the weekend to discuss steps needed to fight Europe’s debt crisis and reaffirmed the importance that Greece remains in the eurozone. G8 leaders also focused on ways to stimulate eurozone growth but no detailed plans on how to resolve the problems were announced. But the single currency remains under pressure as investors are worried about a messy Greek default and exit from the euro ahead of a repeat election in June 17. The US dollar (USD) stumbles against a basket of currencies as sentiment in the market ...

Title: Speculators dollar longs hit 4-year high: CFTC
Currency speculators increased bets in favor of the U.S. dollar to the highest level since at least mid-2008, according to data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission released on Friday. The value of the dollar's net long position rose to $28.52 billion in the week ended May 15, from $20.95 billion the previous week. Short euro positions climbed to 173,869 contracts, the highest on record, from 143,984 a week earlier. The euro zone common currency has sold off in recent weeks as concerns about Spain's banking system and political chaos in Greece threw doubts on whether Europe can commit to austerity plans crucial to tackling the region's debt crisis. The euro hit a 4 month low of $1.2640 on Friday. To be short a currency is to bet it will decline in value, while being long is a ...
