Europe steps closer to the cliff edge
It was a pivotal week for the Eurozone after Greece announced that it was heading back to the polls after the top three parities failed to form a coalition government. So now Greece is leaderless, there is a caretaker government in place but it won't be able to enforce the austerity required to get the next tranche of bailout funds necessary for Greece to avoid running out of money in July. So as time runs out for Greece the European authorities have been clear: the upcoming election is a referendum on euro-membership. Either vote for pro bailout ...

Euro at four month low against dollar as crisis spins
The euro hit a four-month low against the dollar and 3-1/2 month trough versus the yen on Friday as concerns about a chaotic Greek exit from the euro zone and instability in the Spanish banking system fuelled demand for safer currencies.
Investors were reluctant to buy riskier assets after Moody's cut the credit ratings of 16 Spanish banks on Thursday. Fellow ratings agency Fitch downgraded Greece deeper into junk territory.
The euro tumbled to $1.2642, within sight its 2012 low of $1.2624. It has shed 4.1 percent against the dollar so far in May, while demand for the highly liquid dollar pushed it up 0.3 percent against a basket of currency .DXY on the day to a four-month peak of 81.758.
Against the yen, the euro fell to 100.219 yen, its lowest level since early February.

London copper inches above 4-month lows; euro zone weighs
London copper peeked above four-month lows on Friday on short-covering and signs that Greeks are warming to pro-austerity parties, allaying some fears the country could leave the euro zone.
Still, worries about Spain's finances and reports of Chinese copper inflows onto the London Metal Exchange (LME) will likely cap gains in the session.
Three-month LME copper inched up 0.4 percent to $7,682 a metric ton (1.1023 tons) by 00:25 a.m. EDT, after closing almost flat in the previous session.
The most active August copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (ShFE) fell 0.3 percent to 55,580 yuan ($8,800) a tonne, a partial rebound after a steeper fall at the open.
The Shanghai contract rose 1.9 percent on Thursday, much more than its London counterpart, after diving on Wednesday to ...

Anxious investors send S&P lower for fifth day
U.S. stocks hit a four-month low on Thursday as rising Spanish bond yields increased investor anxiety over that country's banks and another round of weak data undermined hopes for U.S. economic recovery.
Growing worries over developments in the euro zone and lackluster economic data pushed the S&P's losing streak to five consecutive days. The index, which closed at a level not seen since mid-January, has now relinquished more than half of its gains from the first quarter.
"There is not a lot of interest in the equity market," said Jason Weisberg, managing director at Seaport Securities Corp in New York. "The overhang with Europe is so heavy, people are tired of playing whack-a-mole, and their portfolios are the mole."
The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI dropped 156.06 points, or 1.24 ...

Jobless claims hold steady at 370,000
New claims for unemployment benefits were unchanged last week, according to government data on Thursday that will do little to ease concerns about a recent slowdown in jobs growth.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits held steady at a seasonally adjusted 370,000, the Labor Department said.
The prior week's figure was revised up to 370,000 from the previously reported 367,000.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims falling to 365,000 last week. The four-week moving average for new claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends, fell 4,750 to 375,000.
The data comes on the heels of three straight months of slowing employment gains. Companies added 115,000 new jobs to their payrolls in April, the fewest in six months.
Thursday's report on claims covered ...

Higher Yielding Currencies Maintain Bearish Trend
Higher Yielding Currencies Maintain Bearish Trend
Higher yielding currencies, namely the EUR and AUD, remained bearish during European trading yesterday, as fears that Greece will have to leave the euro-zone led to risk aversion in the marketplace. Investors are now worried about what the possible effects of a Greek exit from the euro-zone would be for other indebted countries, including Spain and Italy. Today, traders will want to note that there is a bank holiday in France, Germany and Switzerland. That being said, news out of the US may lead to market volatility. The Unemployment Claims figure and Philly Fed Manufacturing Index are both forecasted to show US economic growth. If true, the USD could see gains during the afternoon session.

U.K. Unexpectedly Surprises Markets with Upbeat Jobs Report
The sentiment improved today after the United Kingdom provided markets with the jobs report, where unemployment has unexpectedly dropped in the three months ending in March, raising optimism that the "balanced budget" previously provided by the Chancellor of Exchequer, George Osborne, might have a positive impact on the royal economy and the labor market as well, despite speculations joblessness will peak 8.7% this year before falling again.
Unemployment in the United Kingdom unexpectedly fell to 8.2% from the previous of 8.3%, beating estimates of 8.4%, the thing that raised positivity in the market, supporting the sterling pound to erase most of the losses incurred earlier today; however, the sentiment is still mixed after Greeks found no common grounds regarding the creation of the ...

Drop in jobless claims eases labor market fears
(Reuters) - The number of Americans submitting new applications for jobless benefits edged down last week, easing concerns the labor market was deteriorating after surprisingly weak employment growth in April.
Another report on Thursday showed the U.S. trade deficit widened in March, with exports surging to a record high and a rise in imports highlighting the economy's firming underlying demand.
Together, the reports indicated the economy remains on a moderate growth path, despite the softer jobs growth and signs the service sector slowed in April.
"The slowdown we have seen in economic activity and employment growth during in the past two months may be in the rear view mirror," said Millan Mulraine, senior macro strategist at TD Securities in New York.

Stocks, euro advance on Europe, jobs data
Global stocks advanced for the first time in seven sessions on Thursday on relatively encouraging U.S. jobs data and improved investor sentiment regarding Europe's festering debt crisis.
U.S. and European equity markets rose after data showed U.S. claims for unemployment benefits edged lower last week, a sign of comfort after April's weak employment growth was perceived as a harbinger of a worsening U.S. labor market.
Investors also used a recent streak of declines to buy beaten-down assets, lifting the euro against the dollar for the first time in nine sessions and snapping a six-day losing streak for the Dow Jones industrial average.
"You are seeing traders and investors come into some of these very oversold sectors and buying on the dips. Then suddenly, the people who are scared ...
