Copper up but Greek contagion fears weigh
(Reuters) - Copper extended gains on Monday, rising from four-month lows hit last week despite investors' concern about the risk of contagion if Greece defaults on its debt and leaves the euro.
Leaders of G8 major industrialized nations meeting at the weekend vowed to take steps to combat financial turmoil and revitalize a global economy threatened by Europe's debt crisis, but they offered no specific prescription for debt-crippled Greece which is to hold elections on June 17.
Recent opinion polls show Greek voters are returning to the establishment parties that negotiated its bailout, offering potential salvation for European leaders.
But deepening banking sector instability in Spain heightened concerns about contagion from Greece's political turmoil, meaning investors will likely stay ...

The bearish momentum in Wall Street continued last week as indices shed 4%-5% during the week. The sharp declines were expected from the technical analysis point of view, since the main indices broke significant support in their daily charts, which we have analyzed and marked as key levels. The S&P 500 broke the support at 1350 points and reached the target we set at 1300 points, mainly because of the collapse of the financial sector. The volumes are increasing, which means that the sellers are gaining power, in spite improving economic data and the optimism that spread with Facebook trading on Friday. The three main indices are close to the annual opening levels as NASDAQ's next support is at 2400 points.

The Weekly Bottom Line : 19/05/2012
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
United States
- Global economic concerns ratcheted up this week. Widespread discussion of a Greek exit continued, Spanish banks faced rating downgrades and periphery sovereign debt yields moved higher.
- Financial markets have responded to these global worries with increased risk aversion. The S&P is poised to end the week 3% lower, and 10-year treasuries are yielding just 1.7%.
- U.S. economic data has proved somewhat more encouraging, but growth is still struggling to breakout beyond a moderate pace. This has kept the possibility of additional monetary stimulus alive even if the threshold remains quite high.
Canada
- Recent economic indicators are showing a resurgence of strength in the Canadian economy. Strong ...

The US stock markets opened yesterday's trading session with a strong push by the bulls but the concerns regarding Greece pulled the markets to the red zone eventually. The main indices erased 40%-50% of what they gained from the beginning of the year, and things are looking more and more bearish as the days pass by.
AUD/JPY
The Australian dollar keeps falling against the USD and it slid under the psychological support at 1.0. The weakening of the stocks supports the USD and that is why we see it strengthening against most of the major currencies, including the JPY, which is a strong currency these days. The Yen is clearly stronger than the AUD, as it well shown in the daily chart of the pair, which is getting support at 79.50. If the AUD crosses above the 2-days ...

Spotlight on the Sterling
Forex News and Events:
Yesterday’s European session was a breather for the Euro area as German GDP came in much better than expected at 0.5% q-o-q. The strength of Germany’s numbers pulled EU’s GDP higher to 0.0% against a forecast -0.2%, avoiding a technical recession after last quarter’s -0.3% GDP. Nevertheless, both German and Euro zone economic sentiments were lower, underscoring a fading institutional optimism over economic health. GDP for the biggest European economies after Germany were worrisome, with France generating no growth in the first quarter of 2012 while Italy and Spain’s economies contracted by 0.8% and 0.3% respectively over the same period. The situation in Greece is still moving towards a new round of elections with Independent Greeks party leader Kammemos announcing ...

Gold falls to 4-1/2 month low on Greece risks
Gold dropped to its lowest since late December as the euro sank against the U.S. dollar on worries that a worsening debt crisis in Greece could spill over into its neighbors and threaten the existence of the single currency.
But lower bullion prices triggered a flurry of activity in the physical market, with purchases from jewelers in top consumer India and also Southeast Asia keeping premiums for gold bars steady at $1.20 to London prices in Singapore.
Although euro zone finance ministers have dismissed talk of Greece leaving the euro zone as "propaganda and nonsense", they urged the debt-ridden country to respect the terms of the bailout program agreed with the EU and the International Monetary Fund.
Gold was down $3.80 an ounce at $1,552.85 by 02:20 a.m. EDT (0620 GMT) after hitting ...

The Sterling Pound Drops against the U.S. Dollar ahead of the BoE Rate Decision
With the Bank of England rate decision is just around the corner, the British Royal Currency declined against the low yielding U.S. dollar, on mixed sentiment and thoughts regarding what the Bank of England might do now as the royal economy officially slipped into recession and as inflation is still skyrocketing as well.
The Monetary Policy Committee is projected to leave rates unchanged at 0.5% and the asset purchases program steady at 325 billion pound as the bank still attempts to balance between rising inflation and weakening growth, noting that further cut in the rates is highly unexpected this meeting or this year in general as price pressures prevents policy makers from taking further actions in favor of growth.
The sterling pound declines on slight possibility some of the nine ...

The battle between the sellers and the buyers in Wall Street continued yesterday, as the indices closed on the red territory but made bull candlesticks on the daily chart. The volumes in the US stock markets are higher than average these days, which indicate for the tension among the traders. It looks like the indices are ready for the bullish correction, but the threat of another bearish session still exists.
GBP/USD
We keep mentioning that the pound is a strong currency that suffered from Wall Street weakening otherwise it would probably trade around 1.65 today. The pair made an accurate retest to the break-up level at 1.65, slide under it, and know it has to overcome this obstacle one more time in order to continue rising. Yesterday's candlestick was a long-tail ...

Copper drops to 3-week low on weak euro, Greek worry
Copper prices fell below $8,000 to a three-week low on Wednesday as the dollar rose and worries about the impact of political turmoil in Greece and the euro zone debt crisis sapped demand for risky assets, raising fears about demand for metals.
Benchmark copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME), untraded at the close, was last bid at $8,053 a metric ton (1.1023 tons) from Tuesday's close of $8,095. It earlier hit its lowest level in three weeks at $7,949.75 a metric ton.
Greece moved closer to a second snap election on Wednesday when the head of the biggest party launched a new attack on radical leftist Alexis Tsipras, saying his plans for a new government would push the country out of the euro zone.
The political uncertainty pushed the euro close to a recent three-month low against ...
