Title: Will Greece Leave or Not?
We have heard conflicting information about Greece over the last 24 hours: first we heard that Greece was making plans to leave the Eurozone from former Prime Minister Papademos, which was denied. Then this morning reports from a German newspaper suggested that the ECB had set up a task force (tucked away in a bunker) working on the potential fallout from a Greek exit. It's likely that we will get these conflicting headlines between now and the end of the EU summit, which starts this evening at 1800 BST. The markets' seemed to like the idea of an Avengers - style ECB working to combat the negative effects if Athens goes to the wall, and the euro bounced from its lowest level since 2010 earlier. But the real test will be the outcome of today's summit. So what should we expect and, ...

Title: U.S. Stock Futures Slip on CBO Warning, Greek-Exit Fears
Wall Street may stretch the slide that started at the final hour of trading yesterday, as worries grew that Greece will soon leave the shared currency and the Congressional Budget Office warned the economy would tip back into recession if needed budget measures aren`t taken before year-end. As of 16:12 a.m. in New York time, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures expiring June 12 lost 0.65 percent to 12,395, Standard & Poor`s 500 Index futures fell 0.72 percent, and NASDAQ 100 futures decreased 0.77 percent to 2,515.50. The CBO yesterday warned the U.S. economy would be pulled back into recession next year if Congress fails to address a so-called "fiscal cliff" - a series of policies set to take effect in January that would take more than $500 billion out of the economy in 2013 alone. ...

Title: Euro Rebound Short-Lived
Sunrise Market Commentary - Fixed Income: Profit taking continued, but now concluded? - The profit taking on global core bond markets continued in the run-up to tonight's informal EU-Summit. Spanish and Italian spreads decreased significantly but yields remain at elevated levels. Today, the eco calendar is again thin and trading will again be driven by sentiment. - Currencies: Euro rebound short-lived On - Tuesday, the euro came again under pressure even as the global context was not that negative. Sentiment on risk was constructive and intra-EMU spreads narrowed, but all this didn't prevent investors to use any upticks in the single currency to further reduce exposure. Title: Gold slips in line with euro ahead of EU meeting
(Reuters) - Gold fell towards $1,550 an ounce in Europe, pressured by concerns that a European Union meeting later on Wednesday would fail to significantly ease worries over the euro zone debt crisis which lifted the dollar to a 21-month high against the euro. The dollar, along with German bond futures, benefited from a flight from riskier assets, including stocks and commodities such as copper and oil. Spot gold was down 0.1 percent at $1,555.50 an ounce at 0930 GMT while U.S. gold futures for June delivery were down $20.60 an ounce at $1,556.00. "Gold is acting more as a risky asset, and everything is tumbling this morning ahead of this informal finance ministers meeting, where nothing good is really expected," Societe Generale analyst Robin Bhar said. "It is not inconceivable that ...

Title: Euro hits 21-month low versus dollar before EU summit
(Reuters) - The euro hit a 21-month low against the dollar on Wednesday ahead of an EU meeting later, with investors doubtful that leaders would come up with measures to stem the euro zone debt crisis. An informal EU summit is expected to discuss growth-boosting measures but was not expected to produce any plan that would restore optimism among investors, especially given Germany remains strongly opposed to joint euro bonds. The euro fell to $1.2615, dropping below the 2012 low of $1.2624 set in January to mark its lowest since August 2010. Fears that Greece may have to leave the euro grew after Dow Jones earlier quoted former prime minister Lucas Papademos as saying Greece had no choice but to stick with a painful austerity program or face a damaging exit from the euro zone. However, ...

Title: Japan Policy On Hold, Eyes On BoE Minutes
The euro (EUR) dropped near a 21-month low falling to 1.2645 from 1.2814 against the US dollar as risk aversion dominates the markets. Comments from former Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos raised concerns after he said that Greece has two options, stick to a painful austerity program or face a damaging default and a messy exit from the eurozone. Focus now turns to today’s informal EU summit where France is expected to push a proposal of joint eurozone bonds. The idea of joint bonds can help with funding difficulties for some heavily-indebted eurozone countries but that policy has been rejected by Germany before. EU leaders are also expected to focus more on growth and ways to help Greece stay in the euro. The US dollar (USD) strengthened against a basket of currencies as fears of a ...

Title: Asia Session: Japan Is Thrust Into The Spotlight
Japan was in focus today, with the BOJ ending its two day meeting, yesterday’s downgrade by Fitch and some weak trade data. Overall, the data and announcements proved to be yen positive, pushing USDJPY back below 80.00 early in the session. As expected, the BOJ board unanimously voted to leave policy unchanged at is two day meeting. However, there were some whispers in the market of a possible reduction in the interest rate on reserves and an extension of the JGB maturity guidelines, thus the decision not to move on policy contributed a substantial USDJPY pullback. Yet, the pair managed to regain its footing later in the session and the collapse was stopped around 79.50. Whilst the better than expected Q1 growth figures and the wait-and-see attitude of the BOJ was the main contributor to ...

Title: Guessing game begins over next Treasury chief
(Reuters) - Wanted for the Treasury Department: a new boss who can fix trillion-dollar-plus budget deficits, overhaul the tax system and spur a reluctant Europe into fixing its debt crisis. It's a tall order, especially when the new Treasury chief also must deal with a fractious Congress - and all for a salary lower than that paid to many junior Wall Street bankers. Economists, investors and veterans of past administrations are appraising potential successors to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, either in a new Obama administration, if President Barack Obama is re-elected, or under Mitt Romney. Geithner has made it clear that he is leaving the post he has held since January 2009 even if Obama, a Democrat, beats Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, in the November ...
