Title: U.S. Stock Futures Slip on CBO Warning, Greek-Exit Fears
Wall Street may stretch the slide that started at the final hour of trading yesterday, as worries grew that Greece will soon leave the shared currency and the Congressional Budget Office warned the economy would tip back into recession if needed budget measures aren`t taken before year-end. As of 16:12 a.m. in New York time, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures expiring June 12 lost 0.65 percent to 12,395, Standard & Poor`s 500 Index futures fell 0.72 percent, and NASDAQ 100 futures decreased 0.77 percent to 2,515.50. The CBO yesterday warned the U.S. economy would be pulled back into recession next year if Congress fails to address a so-called "fiscal cliff" - a series of policies set to take effect in January that would take more than $500 billion out of the economy in 2013 alone. ...

Title: Fitch Fires Another Round
Forex News and Events: Fitch downgraded Japan by two notches yesterday afternoon from AA to A+ with outlook negative. The agency justified the credit rating cuts by saying that the Japanese government isn’t reactive enough in tackling its “high and rising public debt ratios”. The move came in a few hours after the OECD urged Japan to prioritize the implementation of a fiscal consolidation plan, as debt-to-GDP ratio exceeds 200 percent, and budget deficits are forecast at 10 percent of GDP for the current year. PM Yoshihiko Noda has staked his political career on a law to increase sales tax to 10% with the goal of offsetting rising social security costs mainly due to the fast ageing of the population. But the opposition that controls the upper house is refusing to negotiate and is ...

Spanish and Italian spreads decreased significantly but yields remain at elevated levels. Today, the eco calendar is again thin and trading will again be driven by sentiment. - Currencies: Euro rebound short-lived On - Tuesday, the euro came again under pressure even as the global context was not that negative. Sentiment on risk was constructive and intra-EMU spreads narrowed, but all this didn't prevent investors to use any upticks in the single currency to further reduce exposure. The key 1.2642/24 support is again coming within reach. The Sunrise Headlines - In the final hour of ...

Title: Gold slips in line with euro ahead of EU meeting
(Reuters) - Gold fell towards $1,550 an ounce in Europe, pressured by concerns that a European Union meeting later on Wednesday would fail to significantly ease worries over the euro zone debt crisis which lifted the dollar to a 21-month high against the euro. The dollar, along with German bond futures, benefited from a flight from riskier assets, including stocks and commodities such as copper and oil. Spot gold was down 0.1 percent at $1,555.50 an ounce at 0930 GMT while U.S. gold futures for June delivery were down $20.60 an ounce at $1,556.00. "Gold is acting more as a risky asset, and everything is tumbling this morning ahead of this informal finance ministers meeting, where nothing good is really expected," Societe Generale analyst Robin Bhar said. "It is not inconceivable that ...

Title: Guessing game begins over next Treasury chief
(Reuters) - Wanted for the Treasury Department: a new boss who can fix trillion-dollar-plus budget deficits, overhaul the tax system and spur a reluctant Europe into fixing its debt crisis. It's a tall order, especially when the new Treasury chief also must deal with a fractious Congress - and all for a salary lower than that paid to many junior Wall Street bankers. Economists, investors and veterans of past administrations are appraising potential successors to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, either in a new Obama administration, if President Barack Obama is re-elected, or under Mitt Romney. Geithner has made it clear that he is leaving the post he has held since January 2009 even if Obama, a Democrat, beats Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, in the November ...

Title: JPY Underperforms Amid Downgrade, Ahead of BoJ
USD stronger today against most of the majors amid higher global equities and higher U.S. treasury yields. A ratings downgrade in Japan, dampened EU Summit expectations and low growth projections in Europe, and slowing inflation in the UK are benefitting the USD. The dollar index rebounded from the 81.00 figure but remains below the double top around the 81.75 level and the dollar is currently strongest against the JPY as UST yields advance. On the data front, the May Richmond Fed manufacturing index (expected to soften to 11 from 14) and April existing home sales (forecast to increase 2.9% m/m to 4.61M) are set for release at the top of the hour. Title: The Endgame of the Greek Crisis
Forex News and Events: It has taken two-and-a-half years, and nearly USD 300bn of IMF/EU funds for markets to finally weigh in a more probable than not exit of the debt-laden country. Greece’s EMU exit is imminent for the second time in the last six months. Surprisingly though, the trigger for the recent gloomy expectations for Greece was not exclusively of an economic nature but also politics. During May 6 elections, the Greeks expressed their unwillingness to abide by the agreed-upon austerity measures. It wouldn’t have been a very dangerous position had Greece been solvent, but regardless of EU officials’ reassurance of continued help for Greece throughout the process, the country would run out of funds for the next installments due end of June and early July. In addition to markets ...

Title: EUR/USD Rebound On Profit Taking
Sunrise Market Commentary - Fixed Income: limited profit taking on core bond markets - Global core bond markets fell prey to some profit taking in a thin, dull trading session. However, given the strength of equities, bond losses were very limited and occurred at the onset of trading. Today, the eco calendar remains thin and the profit taking might go some further in the run-up to tomorrow's informal EU Summit. - Currencies EUR/USD rebound on profit taking - The correction in EUR/USD was prolonged, but the euro gains were modest and mostly technical in nature.
