Euro slides vs. dollar as EU summit hopes wane
(Reuters) - The euro fell against the dollar on Tuesday after two days of gains as investors pared back expectations that an informal meeting of European leaders this week would yield much progress in tackling the region's debt crisis.
However, given the market's stretched bearish positioning and oversold signals on the technical charts, the euro could see a short-term squeeze higher ahead of the European summit.
The yen, meanwhile, tumbled after Fitch downgraded Japan's ratings and although the currency posted the biggest loss versus the dollar, investors remained focused on the euro.
While there have been hopes in some quarters that Wednesday's summit may lead to agreement on measures to boost euro zone growth, investors were not confident of a breakthrough given apparent differences ...

Euro falls as hopes dim of EU summit progress
(Reuters) - The euro fell on Tuesday as skepticism grew that an informal meeting of European leaders would yield much progress in tackling the debt crisis, with worries about Greek politics and Spanish banking problems expected to keep the currency weak.
While there have been hopes in some quarters that measures to boost growth may be agreed at Wednesday's summit, investors were not confident of a breakthrough given apparent differences in opinion between Germany and France.

However Germany, Europe's largest economy and paymaster, has so far opposed the move and continues to champion austerity measures. A German official said on Tuesday euro ...

EUR Resumes Bearish Trend
After steadily gaining on the dollar and yen yesterday in overnight trading, the euro once again turned bearish during the European session. Renewed concerns regarding the political situation in Greece triggered the bearish correction. Still, the common currency was able to avoid dropping to the four-month low hit last week. Turning to today, traders will want to pay attention to a batch of British and US economic indicators. Both the British CPI and Public Sector Net Borrowing figures are forecasted to come in well below last month's figures. If true, the GBP could take losses during mid-day trading. Later in the day, analysts are predicting that the US Existing Home Sales figure will show improvements in the American Real Estate sector. If true, the dollar could move up as a result.

Euro rebound stalls, focus shifts to EU summit
(Reuters) - The euro's rebound from four-month lows stalled on Tuesday, failing to break above technical resistance, though traders said selling could be limited at least until an informal meeting of European leaders this week.
Traders have been reducing their massive bets against the common currency in the past couple of days, taking note of prospects - however slender - that EU leaders may agree measures to bolster investor confidence in the euro zone on Wednesday.
With speculators' short positions on the euro at a record high, traders were wary of the potential for short-squeeze, despite worries about stability of the banking system in Spain and political gridlock in Greece.
"If someone is selling the euro now, I would rather use that as a chance to take profits (from euro short ...

Treasury prices fall as G8 leaders back Greece in euro zone
(Reuters) - Treasuries prices fell slightly on Monday after world leaders over the weekend backed keeping Greece in the euro zone, easing some demand for safe haven U.S. debt, and as $99 billion in new Treasuries supply scheduled for this week was seen weighing on prices.
A summit of the Group of 8 leading industrialized nations on Saturday said they had an interest in having Greece stay in the euro zone and said they would balance European austerity in the region with U.S. style-stimulus seen as vital to healing ailing euro-zone economies.
Investors are looking to the European Central Bank for signs that the central bank will offer new long-term loans as bank funding stresses in the region again rise, though the ECB is not expected to act unless conditions in the worsen.

Facebook IPO Fails to Make a Dent in the Marketplace
Following weeks of speculation regarding how Facebook's debut on the New York Stock Exchange would turn out, investors were mildly disappointed with the social media site's performance on Friday night. Facebook closed out the week at 37.96, slightly below its opening price. What direction Facebook takes from here is a hotly debated topic among market analysts. Some are warning that the site may be overvalued already, and Friday's disappointing performance could be a sign of things to come. That being said, any moves by Facebook to expand its already massive subscribership could generate excitement in the marketplace which could help boost the value of this site.

U.S. Front: Calm Week After G8 Summit, Eyes Still On Greece
We`re heading toward a likely calm trading week in the U.S. with a couple of housing reports, durables report and consumer sentiment mid-May estimate. Unfortunately, the financial markets are still chocked by Europe and Greece`s commitment to the euro zone.
So it is another tensed week for the debt-stricken nations in Europe and particularly Greece as we stomp into the first of four weeks we have to wait until the Greek election, after political leaders failed to forge a unity government following the May 6 elections.
Having just a few earnings and economic reports from the world`s largest economy, markets will likely switch focus on the 17-bloc euro nations and its problems. Markets last week were pinched with speculation Greece will soon be saying its last farewell to the euro.
