Is Facebook Weighing on the Euro or is the Euro Weighing on Facebook?
It has been a lacklustre day post the G8 meeting at the weekend (yawn), the drop in Mark Zuckerberg's net worth seems to be more of a talking point than the continuing Eurozone crisis. But, the Eurozone banking index gives it all away. Bankia, Santander and the usual Spanish suspects all turned lower as we headed into London's lunchtime, which dragged the overall European banking sector down to its lowest level since November 2011. Within a matter of hours EURUSD followed suit and is making fresh lows of the day at 1.2730 (at the time of writing).
Official EU disappointment
Although a temporary bottom may be in place at 1.2624 in EURUSD, the G8 summit highlighted a couple of things that remain negative for the single currency: 1, how divided the Eurozone (and the world) is about how to ...

Asian Stocks Advance On China's Call For Stronger Growth But Sentiment Still Fragile
After China's premier called for additional efforts to support growth, Thailand's economy grew firmly in Q1 and world leaders urged Greece to stay in the euro zone, Asian stocks recovered some of last week's losses, the yen slid while commodities gained.
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index added 0.5% at 12:56 in Tokyo as worries eased on believes China and Japan may take steps to support growth, while world leaders called for Europe to balance austerity with growth during the G-8 summit.
China's Premier Wen Jiabao said over the weekend that his country must adopt a “proactive fiscal policy and a prudent monetary policy” to support growth, spurring speculations of additional stimulus since inflation is moderating.
Meanwhile, Japan is expected to ease its monetary policies even more during BoJ's ...

Euro Succeeds Short Squeeze
Sunrise Market Commentary
- Fixed Income: Global core bonds take a breather
- Investors remained mostly sidelined in an uneventful session on Friday. The G-8 meeting stressed the need for growth, besides fiscal consolidation and sees Greece staying inside EMU. This shouldn’t surprise markets today. With a razor thin calendar, trading might start the week in a lackluster mode.
- Currencies: Euro succeeds short squeeze
- On Friday, the decline of the euro halted and EUR/USD succeeded a cautious rebound, even as uncertainty on the EMU debt crisis persisted. Technical considerations will also dominate trading today as the G8 meeting provided no high profile measures to address the debt crisis.
The Sunrise Headlines
- US Equities rose for a second consecutive session on ...

Weekly Economic and Financial Commentary : 19/05/2012
U.S. Review
To QE3 or Not To QE3: That is the Question
- Some market participants are beginning to speculate about another round of quantitative easing. Although recent growth indicators have not been particularly stellar, the economy is still growing. Moreover, core CPI inflation in the neighborhood of 2 percent means that the threshold for more QE is relatively high.
- Overall, indicators were positive during the week. Housing starts increased by 2.6 percent in April, the Empire Manufacturing index improved to 17.09 in May from a 6.56 print in April and retail sales printed a 0.1 percent increase in April, in line with expectations.

Gold jumps, heads for biggest 2-day gain since October
Gold rose more than 1 percent on Friday, on track for its largest two-day gain since October, boosted by investors' consolidation of positions ahead of the weekend and a stronger euro.
The second day of gains helped bolster confidence, which had been shaken by gold's fall earlier this week to a four-month low at $1,527 an ounce, near critical long-term support levels.
But traders remained cautious given how the escalating crisis in Europe has driven the single currency lower this month.
"There is still no conviction in the market. If gold was a safe haven, it should be higher. Physical demand is mediocre and the Europeans want the dollar, which is why it is so strong," a physical U.S. gold trader said.
The psychologically important $1,600-per-ounce mark remained elusive.
