Euro tumbles on Greek exit fears
(Reuters) - The euro slumped 1 percent against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, ahead of an informal meeting of European leaders, on growing fears of a Greek exit from the euro zone.
Dow Jones quoted former Greek prime minister Lucas Papademos as saying that Greeks had no choice but to stick with a painful austerity program or face a damaging exit from the euro zone, a risk he said was unlikely to materialize but that was real.
He also told the news agency that some European states and institutions were considering contingency plans for any eventuality.
"Sentiment is heavily against the euro," said Joseph Trevisani, chief market strategist at Worldwide Markets, Woodcliff Lake in New Jersey. "Any negative comment from former or current Greek officials sends the euro plummeting. There were ...

Forex-Euro slides ahead of summit; yen tumbles
(Reuters) - The euro fell against the dollar for the first time in three days on Tuesday as investors doubted whether an informal meeting of European leaders this week would yield much progress in tackling the region's debt crisis.
The weakness in Europe's common currency suggested an uncertain outlook despite a fall in Spanish and Italian government bond yields, and some analysts said stretched positioning and oversold signals could lead to a short squeeze and a higher euro.
While there have been hopes that Wednesday's summit may lead to agreement on measures to boost euro zone growth, investors were not confident of a breakthrough given apparent differences in opinion between Germany and France.
French President Francois Hollande is expected to push for a joint euro zone bond, a ...

Asia Session: Europe, Europe And More Europe
Nervousness underpinned price action today. Despite voices from throughout Europe attempting to reassure the market that Greece will remain in the euro, stock markets in Asia didn't significantly build on their opening gains and the euro slowly drifted lower throughout the session.
Why is the market behaving like this? In one word – caution. Investors are acutely aware that the talk from Europe may just be that, and when push comes to shove nothing may happen. And, in this case that is a very bad thing considering the fate of so many economies (both in Europe and elsewhere) hang in the balance.
Whilst there are many different views, most economists agree that letting Greece slipe away may prove to be more costly than keeping it in the Eurozone. Thus, the market wants reassurances that ...

Inertia Will Sink The Euro Again
The G8 Summit achieved very little in public which was no real surprise, but there was also an apparent lack of urgency surrounding the Euro-zone situation which was a much greater surprise given a sharp deterioration in the financial sector last week. Where was the urgency for fresh action to help support the Euro banking sector? The absence must surely indicate that Euro-zone and G8 leaders, while paying lip-service to the current strategy, have effectively moved on and are actively planning the next stage of the crisis.
Fear is likely to dominate in the short term and this is likely to keep strong defensive demand for the dollar and yen. In these circumstances, there is no real chance of a sustained Euro rally with 2012 lows likely to be seen. Bond markets will be watched very closely ...

Is Facebook Weighing on the Euro or is the Euro Weighing on Facebook?
It has been a lacklustre day post the G8 meeting at the weekend (yawn), the drop in Mark Zuckerberg's net worth seems to be more of a talking point than the continuing Eurozone crisis. But, the Eurozone banking index gives it all away. Bankia, Santander and the usual Spanish suspects all turned lower as we headed into London's lunchtime, which dragged the overall European banking sector down to its lowest level since November 2011. Within a matter of hours EURUSD followed suit and is making fresh lows of the day at 1.2730 (at the time of writing).
Official EU disappointment
Although a temporary bottom may be in place at 1.2624 in EURUSD, the G8 summit highlighted a couple of things that remain negative for the single currency: 1, how divided the Eurozone (and the world) is about how to ...

BoJ Rate Decision the Highlight for Asia this Week
Asian markets are waiting heavy data during the upcoming week starting with the Bank of Japan decision and the release of HSBC flash Manufacturing PMI for China.
The Bank of Japan has left rates between 0.0% and 0.10%, in order to support the nation’s growth against the current instability and although inevitable will not change rates, investors await any move with more stimulus as the USDJPY falls below 80 levels again.
The Japanese economy showed signs of recovery where last week the decline in machinery orders slowed in March, as well as recording more-than-expected expansion during the first quarter to begin exiting deflation that faced the nation’s economy since 2011.
The BOJ is expected to keep the monetary policy unchanged and keep monitoring markets closely with a slight ...

Oil hits 2012 low under $107 on euro zone turmoil
Oil prices slipped below $107 a barrel on Friday and hit a 2012 low as investors fought shy of riskier, growth-oriented assets on fears that Greece would leave the euro, and after a downgrade of 16 Spanish banks by Moody's added to the contagion gloom.
Brent crude was down 51 cents to $106.98 a barrel by 1122 GMT after earlier slipping to its lowest level for the year at $106.40. U.S. crude was up 16 cents to $92.72.
"The driving factor is still what is going on in Europe with the downgrades of the Spanish banks and very negative sentiment towards risk investments," said Eugen Weinberg, an analyst at Commerzbank in Frankfurt. "It's not surprising to see further falls in Brent today."
The euro fell to fresh four-month lows as the dollar strengthened .DXY, putting commodities priced in ...

Oil falls on euro zone worries, weak economic data
Brent crude oil slumped more than 2 percent on Thursday, touching the lowest price since December, as investors avoided risky assets due to mounting fears that turmoil in Greece could spread to other stressed euro zone economies.
U.S. crude was down by less than Brent, which reduced Brent's premium against U.S. crude to below $15, from above $19 the previous session, as owners of the U.S. Seaway pipeline announced just after midday that its reversal was completed as expected.
The initial flow of crude that will head for the main U.S. refining center in Houston was to occur by the weekend, a development aimed at easing the supply glut of U.S. crude at the delivery hub in Cushing, Oklahoma. Easing that glut should narrow the premium that Brent has enjoyed over U.S. crude.
But market focus ...
