UK Inflation Cools Back to 3.0%, Another Step Closer to BoE's 2.0% Target
April CPI y/y: 3.0%
Forecast: 3.1%

Official release (PDF)
Recent GBP-weakness has to do with the Bank of England putting QE and basically the idea of monetary stimulus back on the table. This was not a viable option when the inflation rate was above the target of 2.0%. However as Mervyn King mentioned in the latest dovish BoE Inflation report, inflation is slowing. This data confirms that, and with commodity prices continuing to fall in May, we can expect the trend to continue downwards.
The latest release of CPI data for April showed that the year-on-year rate cooled to 3.0%, after a 3.5% reading in March. This has cooled considerably since the 5.2% in Oct. 2011. This now gives more leeway for the ...

The Endgame of the Greek Crisis
Forex News and Events:
It has taken two-and-a-half years, and nearly USD 300bn of IMF/EU funds for markets to finally weigh in a more probable than not exit of the debt-laden country. Greece’s EMU exit is imminent for the second time in the last six months. Surprisingly though, the trigger for the recent gloomy expectations for Greece was not exclusively of an economic nature but also politics. During May 6 elections, the Greeks expressed their unwillingness to abide by the agreed-upon austerity measures. It wouldn’t have been a very dangerous position had Greece been solvent, but regardless of EU officials’ reassurance of continued help for Greece throughout the process, the country would run out of funds for the next installments due end of June and early July. In addition to markets ...

Windsor Brokers - Short Term Technical Analysis for Majors (07:00 GMT)
EUR/USD
Maintains near-term positive tone off last Friday’s low at 1.2641, as yesterday’s dip was contained above important 1.2700 level. Fresh gains above 1.2800 and previous high at 1.2811, see potential for further retracement and test of strong resistance zone at 1.2900/15, with break above initial dynamic barrier of 55 day EMA at 1.2830 required. However, overall bearish tone still keeps the downside vulnerable. Immediate supports lie at 1.2780, overnight’s low and 1.2770, trendline support, while loss of 1.2724, yesterday’s low, would weaken the near-term structure.

EUR/USD Rebound On Profit Taking
Sunrise Market Commentary
- Fixed Income: limited profit taking on core bond markets
- Global core bond markets fell prey to some profit taking in a thin, dull trading session. However, given the strength of equities, bond losses were very limited and occurred at the onset of trading. Today, the eco calendar remains thin and the profit taking might go some further in the run-up to tomorrow's informal EU Summit.
- Currencies EUR/USD rebound on profit taking
- The correction in EUR/USD was prolonged, but the euro gains were modest and mostly technical in nature. The UK inflation report is the eye-catcher of the day as it may influence sterling. However, overall trading might again be thin ahead of tomorrow's euro Summit.
The Sunrise Headlines
- US Equities rose for a second ...

Safe-Haven Dollar
Forex News and Events:
Friday’s trading session was mostly uneventful with all the focus shifted to Facebook’s IPO. Many markets that had been freefalling these last two weeks caught a breather, with gold, silver, and the EUR gaining 1.12%, 2.57% and 0.63% respectively against the USD. The reversal has been attributed to a weak Philly Fed reading on economic activity in a sign that the world’s reserve currency is riskier than panicked markets are pricing. The weak number raised speculation over a new round of interventions from the part of the Fed in order to boost its economy. WTI however, was not able to profit from this reversal as it dropped to a six-month low before closing at 91.33. A 22-year high in inventory levels for the US could explain the decoupling of oil from the rest of ...

Euro Succeeds Short Squeeze
Sunrise Market Commentary
- Fixed Income: Global core bonds take a breather
- Investors remained mostly sidelined in an uneventful session on Friday. The G-8 meeting stressed the need for growth, besides fiscal consolidation and sees Greece staying inside EMU. This shouldn’t surprise markets today. With a razor thin calendar, trading might start the week in a lackluster mode.
- Currencies: Euro succeeds short squeeze
- On Friday, the decline of the euro halted and EUR/USD succeeded a cautious rebound, even as uncertainty on the EMU debt crisis persisted. Technical considerations will also dominate trading today as the G8 meeting provided no high profile measures to address the debt crisis.
The Sunrise Headlines
- US Equities rose for a second consecutive session on ...

Signs that Bearish Sentiment May be Wearing a Bit Thin
Signs that Bearish Sentiment May be Wearing a Bit Thin
The Facebook IPO today has temporarily knocked Europe from the headlines as the world's eyes are focused on the Nasdaq at 1430 GMT/ 0930 ET when Facebook will start trading for the first time. CNBC anchors have been wearing honorary hoodies to mark the occasion so it must be big. I still find it hard to reconcile how FB is worth $140 billion when the site is used by both advertisers and cyber bullies, but perhaps I'm missing the point. The point today is that it is the third largest IPO in the US ever, Zuckerberg will be a gaszillionaire and U2's Bono is likely to earn $1.5bn from his initial $90 million investment. Facebook might not change the trading world, but it could change the Forbes rich list quite dramatically.

Greece + Spain
Majors resumed the bearish tone against the greenback after a slight recovery with the start of the trading session, where the U.S dollar headed to new highs and continues to bag meaty gains against its major counterparts. The overall scene is clearly derived by Greek jitters, while a care-taker government leads the country until June’s fresh elections. It seems that markets have already started the pricing process of a Greece exit; if that is true, the selloff we have seen is just the beginning.
Spain weighed on markets as well, the country dipped technicaly into recession as the economy contracted by 0.3% in the first quarter which is the second consecutive contraction. while Moody`s rating agency plans an immenent yp to 21 Spanish banks downgrades according to Spanish newspaper ...

Euro Sell-Off Accelerates As Greece Will Hold Now Elections
Sunrise Market Commentary
- Fixed Income: Fresh elections in Greece further support core bonds
- German bund came off the contract highs at the start of the session on better German Q1 GDP data. The move didn't last long however and the announcement of fresh Greek elections marked an intraday U-turn. This morning, the German Bund future and US Note future once again reach new contract highs.
- Currencies: euro sell-off accelerates as Greece will hold now elections.
- On Tuesday morning it looked temporary that the euro might enjoy some breathing space as the German Q1 growth was much stronger than expected. However, the rebound had no momentum at all. The euro was again hammered as talks on the formation of the Greek government collapsed. Is the euro heading for a free fall? ...
