"Fears of a Greek exit from the euro zone and the negative consequences from that are prevailing"
- Ben Kwong, KGI Asia
European stocks edged lower after Fitch downgraded Greece’s credit rating to ‘CCC’, implying that the country is vulnerable and highly dependent on favourable economic conditions to fulfill its financial obligations.

"If there were scope to do another twist of some type it would be prudent to consider it, especially in the scenario where things are worse and the Fed feels like it needs to move"
- Nathan Sheets, Citigroup Inc.
Fed policymakers might potentially launch another round of Operation Twist rather than a direct asset purchases in case of increased risks or further weakening of the US economy.

Global Markets Weekahead: Euro zone policy action becoming critical
(Reuters) - The now familiar European cycle of crisis followed by political action, temporary respite, then another crisis enters that crucial second stage next week when leaders of the 27-member European Union seek solutions in Brussels.
Investors will also be concerned with how hard the crisis is hitting the euro economy, with flash estimates of business activity due from the latest purchasing managers' surveys, and with the view from Bank of Japan policymakers meeting in Tokyo.
The potential for a Greek euro exit and the deteriorating health of the Spanish banking system have fueled a growing sense among investors that the crisis in the 17-member currency bloc is nearing new heights.
"This whole European situation has been managed via crisis," said Didier Saint-Georges, a member of ...

Euro drops to near 4-month low on Greek deadlock
The euro fell to a nearly four-month low against the dollar on Monday on fears Greece could exit the euro and worries that weak industrial data signaled that Europe was heading for recession.
Concerns about slowing Chinese and global growth also drove down higher-yielding currencies and boosted the safe-haven dollar and yen. The Australian dollar fell to a five-month low against the greenback, while the New Zealand dollar dropped to a 4-1/2-month trough.
Greece's political impasse, as a major Greek leftist party refused to join a unity government or create a government of technocrats, also pushed the country's sovereign spreads over German bunds to their widest level since November.
Greece's troubles helped drive up Spain's and Italy's borrowing costs. Spain's bill auctions also showed ...

EUR/USD Testing Key Support
Sunrise Market Commentary
- Fixed Income: new contract highs
- London-traders returned and the market seemed to react with a lag to this weekend's election results. In a risk off session, both the German Bund Future and the US Note Future set new contract highs, respectively at 142.62 and 133-04.
- Currencies EUR/USD testing key support
- On Tuesday, sentiment on the euro remained fragile even as there was little news from the political scene in France or Greece. EUR/USD is again testing the key 1.2974/55 support area. A break below this level would be highly significant from a technical point of view.
The Sunrise Headlines
- US Equities dropped sharply lower yesterday, but reversed most of their losses in the final hours of trading. The S&P ended the session 0.43% lower. ...

Gloom builds for euro zone, United States
(Reuters) - The euro zone economy worsened markedly last month and U.S. employers cut back on hiring, according to two reports on Friday that dampened hopes for gradual recovery on either side of the Atlantic.
In Europe, the purchasing managers indexes (PMIs), which primarily cover services, suggested a recession across the continent's currency union could now extend to mid-year and be deeper than previously thought.
The gloomy surveys clashed with the picture painted by European Central Bank President Mario Draghi, who on Thursday spoke of a gradual recovery taking place in the euro zone during the course of the year - although he did speak about risks.
In the United States, a government report showed employers added a disappointing 115,000 workers to payrolls last month and, ...

Wall Street posts worst week of 2012 as job growth slows
(Reuters) - Wall Street ended its worst week this year with a sharp selloff on Friday after a slowdown in job creation in the world's top economy raised the biggest question mark yet about the prospects for U.S. growth.
Employers reduced hiring for the third straight month, adding 115,000 workers in April, well below forecasts of 170,000. Traders' expectations had fallen during the week, but the softer jobs number missed even more pessimistic forecasts.
Energy shares were the worst performers, with the S&P energy index .GSPE down 2.2 percent on fears a worsening economy would sap demand. U.S. crude oil fell 4 percent, dropping below $100 a barrel for the first time since February.

Weekly Economic and Financial Commentary : 04/05/2012
U.S. Review
Modest Growth on a Broadening Base
- The underlying tone of the recent economic reports remains consistent with modest economic growth. Consumer spending ended the first quarter on a solid note and spending is now on track to grow at a 2 percent pace in the second quarter.
- Reports from the regional manufacturing surveys showed some weakness but the National ISM report came in stronger than expected. The nonmanufacturing survey, however, came in below expectations.
- Nonfarm employment rose by 115,000 jobs in April and the unemployment rate fell 0.1 percent to 8.1 percent.
Modest Growth on a Broadening Base
This week's ISM report came in better than expected, rising 1.4 points to 54.8 in April, which greatly relieves fears built up from the weaker factory orders ...

Stocks, euro slip after weak data
(Reuters) - Global stocks and the euro fell on Wednesday after data showed U.S. companies hired the fewest people in seven months in April and the euro zone's factory sector slipped further.
The reports came a day after an index of U.S. factory activity posted its strongest growth rate in 10 months and sent the Dow Jones industrial average to its highest close in four years.
The S&P 500 and the Dow declined as investors turned cautious ahead of Friday's U.S. nonfarm payrolls report for April, while government debt prices advanced on safe-haven demand.
U.S. companies added only 119,000 jobs last month, well short of expectations of 177,000, a worrisome sign of a labor market that has struggled to gain traction.
"If fewer and fewer people are participating in this recovery it suggests ...
