To QE3 or Not To QE3: That is the Question
- Some market participants are beginning to speculate about another round of quantitative easing. Although recent growth indicators have not been particularly stellar, the economy is still growing. Moreover, core CPI inflation in the neighborhood of 2 percent means that the threshold for more QE is relatively high.
- Overall, indicators were positive during the week. Housing starts increased by 2.6 percent in April, the Empire Manufacturing index improved to 17.09 in May from a 6.56 print in April and retail sales printed a 0.1 percent increase in April, in line with expectations.

Oil hits 2012 low under $107 on euro zone turmoil
Oil prices slipped below $107 a barrel on Friday and hit a 2012 low as investors fought shy of riskier, growth-oriented assets on fears that Greece would leave the euro, and after a downgrade of 16 Spanish banks by Moody's added to the contagion gloom.
Brent crude was down 51 cents to $106.98 a barrel by 1122 GMT after earlier slipping to its lowest level for the year at $106.40. U.S. crude was up 16 cents to $92.72.
"The driving factor is still what is going on in Europe with the downgrades of the Spanish banks and very negative sentiment towards risk investments," said Eugen Weinberg, an analyst at Commerzbank in Frankfurt. "It's not surprising to see further falls in Brent today."
The euro fell to fresh four-month lows as the dollar strengthened .DXY, putting commodities priced in ...

Loonie Drops On Speculation Of Worsening Turmoil In Europe
Loonie Drops On Speculation Of Worsening Turmoil In Europe
Tradervox (Dublin) - The Canadian dollar has weakened to its lowest last seen in January after the European central bank indicated that it is going to reduce its lending to some banks in Greece to reduce its risk. Investors have taken this to mean that Greece might lose its position in euro zone which has caused risk aversion.
Earlier, the loonie had erased some of the losses it had experienced against the dollar after economic data showed positive economic outlook for North American region lending support to sentiments that Bank of Canada might increase interest rates. However, the crisis in Europe has led to a decline in crude oil prices which is the biggest export commodity from Canada hence forcing the nation's currency to ...

Oil falls on euro zone, WTI at six-month low
Oil prices slid with world shares and the euro on Wednesday as investors fled from riskier assets, while a surprise build in U.S. crude inventories helped send the WTI benchmark to a more than six-month low.
The possibility a political crisis in Greece may force the country's exit from the euro zone and send the region into deeper financial turmoil is fanning concerns about a slowdown in global demand for oil.
"One element contributing to the decline in oil prices is general investor risk aversion stemming from euro zone concerns and an increased risk of a general economic slowdown," said Gareth Lewis-Davies, a senior energy strategist at BNP Paribas.
It has also helped send the euro to a four-month low against the dollar, another factor weighing on oil prices on Wednesday.
"Another is ...

Gold posts worst weekly drop this year on euro fears
Gold fell almost 1 percent on Friday as fears over a worsening European debt crisis and sharp losses in equities and commodities sent the precious metal to its biggest weekly decline this year.
The metal came under heavy pressure as disclosures of huge trading losses at JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N), a major bullion trader, dented sentiment among gold investors. Sharp losses in crude oil and copper also offset surprisingly robust U.S. consumer confidence data.
Political uncertainty in Greece and a change of leadership in France this week had investors doubting whether Europe would come through with the billions of euros needed to bail out its troubled economies. Spanish bank worries also added to debt fears.
"Everybody's looking in Europe trying to figure out what's going on there, so you ...

Gold hits 4-month low as dollar rises, stocks slide
Gold prices fell to a four-month low on Friday as worries over the financial health of Greece and Spain and huge trading losses for JPMorgan hurt stock markets and the euro, prompting investors to seek refuge in the dollar.
Investors liquidated gold holdings to cover losses on other markets, analysts said, as a rise in risk aversion sparked selling across assets seen as higher risk, while lifting the U.S. currency and safe-haven German Bunds.
Spot gold slid to $1,573.29 an ounce, its weakest since January 3, after support gave way at $1,579, and was down 0.7 percent at $1,582.19 an ounce at 1145 GMT.
Prices pared the worst of their losses as hopes that a Greek government may be formed soon lifted the euro from lows, but spot prices were still down nearly 4 percent so far this week, ...
